"This seems fishy. AP says First Ukranian Division. This wasn't created from the 14th SS Grenadier division or Galician division until the very end of the war, March 1945, and the unit surrendered by May 1945.
Also its worth noting that the 14th division was never found to have been involved in war crimes like the German SS divisions. Even the Canadian Jewish Congress investigated and found nothing.
Likewise the The Canadian Deschênes Commission on war crimes investigated and found nothing, and showed that the immigrants from this division were given carefully security screening before being allowed entry. Records from the Nazis themselves even show that there was no attempt to indoctrinate that division into Nazism. They specifically kept it separate for fear of causing demoralization. It was basically just cannon fodder to fight the Bolsheviks, and not at all like the German SS people are familiar with. This again was by design and supported by records from the Nazis themselves.
So to recap, this old man was a teenager, who probably signed up in the last 4 months of the war. At the time the creation of that unit to fight against communists was seen as a step towards Ukrainian independence, which attracted volunteers thinking they'd be fighting for Ukraine.
It sounds insane to us now, given what we know about the Nazis, but its unlikely some Ukrainian teenager would have had any clue about that, especially given how the Nazis deliberately avoided spreading indoctrination among them, as previously stated.
