OK sports fans, so this is my last bulletin for my position at @LosAngelesTimes. I resigned yesterday in protest of the paper's and owner's cozying up to Trump. Here's my explanation on my substack, where you can still follow me going forward. harrylitman.substack.com/p/w…

My deepest sympathy to @evan7257 because there's no way there'll be an Ike Dyke in our lifetime with this incoming administration (meaning the likelihood of there being a Texas coast in our lifetime is also a lot lower).

I was proud to work with President Trump defending America at the United Nations. I wish him, and all who serve, great success in moving us forward to a stronger, safer America over the next four years.

Don’t ask whose fault this was. Plenty of time for second-guessing and recriminations. Ask instead, what can you do? For my part, that means telling the truth as I see it, as long as I can. The media will be under a lot of pressure to toe the line; don’t capitulate in advance

Americans are shockingly blind to the stranglehold the Catholic Church has had on SCOTUS for decades.
Holy Hell. JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, told the Napa Institute in 2021 that Dominic Legge was the first priest w/ whom he discussed converting. This matters bc Legge sits on the board of the Napa Legal Institute where Leonard Leo is a director! 1/ #LeoPuppet

I've worked in campaigns for a long time, and known so many operatives in both parties. There has never been a collection of just awful human beings assembled around one candidate like the Trump campaign. Here you have a 42 year old obese incel @TheStevenCheung, who never did anything of note in politics before the Trump garbage truck picked him up, writing stuff you'd find on a bathroom wall at a truck stop. Like deadbeat dad Jason Miller, Lewandowski, Bannon. The whole crew. All of these people tried to work in presidential politics before 2016 and no one would come near them. These same freaks will surround Trump if he wins. And they are one of the reasons he will lose.
Rotund angry Trump spokesman accuses opponent’s female campaign chair of infidelity and nobody bats an eye because it’s just one more drop of repugnance in the vile Niagara of Trumpism.

I'm not saying that the Selzer poll is being written off as an outlier because it's a woman-owned polling company buuuuuut ....

Three options here: 1. Selzer is right and Harris wins in a massive landslide 2. This poll is just a bad poll (it happens, but it happens to Selzer less than others) 3. Harris isn’t really winning IA but the poll is capturing late stage momentum that bodes well for WI,MI,PA

The Oscar best picture winners for the last decade are like Star Trek films: the odd numbered years are often kinda rough, the even numbers are great, and Everything Everywhere All at Once is the Search for Spock that breaks the rule.

The worst part of being a film critic is when you read someone else's review of a film and you quickly realize that they didn't understand it, and shouldn't have been let near the keyboard afterwards.

Just read a review of Meanwhile on Earth and my only thought was "You just didn't understand the text or subtext of the last 20 minutes, did you?"

Dear @caryn_coleman, please, please, please bring THE GRADUATES to Austin. You are a hero for getting this timely, beautiful movie out there. Number three in my annual list of Top 10 Festival Films You Haven’t Seen Yet for 2023. austinchronicle.com/daily/sc…

Joe Rogan. Unfunny and lazy.
Joe Rogan declined an interview with the first sitting woman Vice President of the United States who is also the first Black & Asian woman Vice President because she won't come to his house. No. Really. With 7 days to go before the election ends & while taking briefings on Iran.

The Last Showgirl - the standout film from this year's Austin Film Festival. @pamelaanderson and @DaveBautista should be in awards consideration, and @jamieleecurtis truly disappears into her part. A bitter, beautiful elegy to demolished history.

Just saw an article entitled "Sean Baker Avoided Politics in His Films — Until Anora" and I'm sorry but what editor can look at Take Away, Four Letter Words, and Prince of Broadway, and not see how deeply political they are.
