Classification of lexical retrieval impairments in #PPA
Lexical retrieval deficits in PPA are usually sorted broadly into semantic or phonological. But lexical retrieval is a complex process that can break down at several points. What are the functional impairments in PPA? >>
We assessed 40 Hebrew speakers with PPA using a battery of production and comprehension tasks, and classified every naming error. We identified the functional locus of each participant's deficit within a cognitive neuropsychological model of lexical retrieval. >>
PPA is heterogeneous: different participants had deficits at different components.
This is the first systematic description of PPA in Hebrew. More to come!
With @FriedmannNaama, @OphirKeret and Amir Glik in Aphasiology:

Lexical retrieval is usually modeled on single, simplex words. But words appear in sentences, and can be morphologically complex (almost every Hebrew word!).
With @FriedmannNaama we tested 23 speakers with language impairment and built a model of how Hebrew verbs are retrieved>>
We compared transitivity alternations, where morphology is tied to argument structure, with cases where it isn't. Speakers with argument-structure deficits substitute morphology only in alternating verbs; those with deficits in phonological stages, in all verb types and nouns >>
In the model, morphology is distributed across cognitive components, and the components differ in what counts as a discrete unit of representation.

A lovely language session today at #ISCOP23.@YuvalK_language presented our work with @OphirKeret on progressive aphasia. Using cognitive-language models we can pinpoint the deficit of each patient (in red in the picture) beyond the 3 variants, raising hopes for targeted treatment

I had so much fun discussing linguistic models of aphasia with the bright and diverse group of @emcl_eu students and the wonderful people at @univgroningen. Thanks you @adrofes!
So good to have Yuval Katz as a guest lecturer for EMCL++! Thank you for the very enriching discussions (and for the treats!). Keep in touch! @emcl_eu @univgroningen @YuvalK_language
Our poster at #AoA2022
At #AoA2022 today, @YuvalK_language wonderfully presents our work with @OphirKeret showing that using models from the post-stroke aphasia world would be very useful for pinpointing the functional locus in PPA, much more than the current 3 variants.
On Wednesday I presented my work with @GurShalom Ronit Szterman and @FriedmannNaama at #IATL37 on processing of A'-movement and pronoun dependencies in developmental disorders. It was so fun having IATL in person again!
There is a one-way dissociation: there are children who have impaired A-bar but intact pronouns. some children are impaired in both. All of our participants who had intact A-bar also had intact pronouns.

when we retrieve words we seldom do it outside of a sentence. @YuvalK_language beautifully presented a model that we work on, in which we try to incorporate syntax into the lexical retrieval model, and how it processes morphologically complex verbs
