Back in the day, instead of zoomerisms and dated references and literally ignoring the story, we had "translators notes". They weren't perfect, but you learned something and they were mostly accurate. They were a gorillian% more accurate than fucking Gamergate references.

If your plan for localization is “just keep it in Japanese and expect English speakers to learn what Japanese words mean,” that’s not a plan. Imagine if they did that in Spanish shows and left “usted” and “tú” to show the difference. It would sound bizarre.

Never bothered to check the Japanese until now because there's three different translations and they're all pretty much the same so I thought it was safe to assume it's accurate, but I guess they were all just copying each other's homework and rewording it so it's less obvious

Either the translator didn't get the joke or they have some walking stereotype of a German whose job it is to make sure absolutely no slang makes it into the script even at the expense of ruining jokes. Neither would surprise me honestly.
