🏺🇬🇷 Alternate histories like this are infinitely more interesting than "Byzantine restoration" slop.
The "boring" aesthetics (the current Greek flag, the simplistic country name, etc.) are precisely what makes them great.
Does it feel weird to see "Greece" randomly owning the Sudan? Would it feel more natural to see a different title, "Byzantium", or maybe "Macedon", owning Syria? That is precisely the problem!
The aesthetics of Modern Greece have been detached from those of conquest, meaning that most of us have no imagination beyond referring to the past. This did not happen because we cannot conquer - even during the Venizelos/Atatürk era, Greece conquered - but because of a cocktail of monarchism and leftism - which is best left for another time.
Obviously, Modern Greece will not "conquer Pakistan". But even if she conquers nothing, it is important to reattach her aesthetics to conquest, to "creating new realities". This is relevant even to economic growth.
If you cringe at the idea of "Greek Syria" and think that "Byzantine Syria" would be more fitting, that is not because there is anything wrong with the modern Greek aesthetic, but because you have been mentally destroyed.
To cure yourself, try thinking about:
- A Greek-colonized Brazil
- The Modern Greek flag flying all over Anatolia - but not Constantinople!
- Greek megacorporations
- "Greece" primarily evoking thoughts of our modern state in foreigners, rather than of a vague past
- Brazilian Miku in a Greek flag bikini...
