The terms of any deal, and the framing, will matter hugely for public support. Most Brits are ok with freedom of movement to gain access to the single market, but not if the same fom is framed as loss of control over immigration
NEW: The next EU and UK summit will take place on 20 November in Brussels, ending months of uncertainty about the event. The two sides hope to sign three agreements: * a food-and-drink deal to ease Brexit red tape * a pact linking the EU and UK's emissions-trading systems, so avoiding European carbon taxes on British businesses * a youth mobility scheme, enabling under 30s to live, work, study and travel for a time-limited period on both sides of the channel. EU officials have also said the summit would be an occasion to discuss the future of the relationship, while stressing the UK needs to define what it wants. One of the Burnham government's top priorities is to ensure the UK is not disadvantaged by the bloc's ‘Made in Europe’ laws that could favour EU manufacturers in strategic sectors, such as renewable energy, nuclear and electric cars - @JenniferMerode reports

Housing brought down a government in Spain. But what about the UK? I spoke to @JonnyDymond this weekend on @BBCWorldatOne about how, in Britain, housing is a 2nd tier issue, far behind cost of living, NHS. But it is more important for young people - 3rd issue impacting their vote
Toca movilizarse. Toca pelear. El 29 de noviembre vamos a hacer historia. Otra vez.

But housing is caught in the wider pessimism around what politics is able to deliver, something we've seen for a while in our @Ipsos_in_the_UK polling. V interesting and timely episode, have a listen here bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0032f9…

"Vote Green and watch Labour move" - whether or not voters will think PR is a good idea, I think parties will adapt their strategies easily enough. Straight out of continental multi-party playbook.
Zack Polanski has urged people to keep voting Green as a way of forcing Labour into more left-wing positions "Vote Green and watch Labour move," he said in his Brighton conference speech on Friday, reports PolHome's @matilda__martin politicshome.com/news/articl…

🚨NEW from @Ipsos_in_the_UK Has Burnham's Conference speech given Britain hope? For some, about 1/4 when it comes to public services and Britain's future, but over 1/4 are LESS hopeful about their quality of life.

When considering a trade-off, 2 in 5 favour the changes to the triple lock if it helps fund a National Care Service. But views very much split along party lines. Most Labour and LD are convinced, but Cons and Reform lean towards maintaining the triple lock as is.

Also doubt this line is cutting through with most generations. But also, people in the 70s might also disagree? 1973: 48% system of governing Britain works well, 2026: 14% From @Ipsos_in_the_UK WE BRITISH ipsos.com/en-uk/we-british-w…
I do wonder if politicians on the right understand just how flat the “he’s taking us back to the 70s” sounds. Much of the electorate has no memory at all of the politics of that era. They do have sharp memories of what we have had recently. And many conclude anything might be better.

GE2024 was the most disproportional election in modern history and we know support for PR is growing as people are disillusioned with the system - 23% of Brits say they felt the UK government represents their views. But PR is a 3rd order issue ....
EXCL: Andy Burnham expected to announce he will push ahead with plans for electoral reform in first conference speech as Labour leader. The PM, a longtime advocate of reform, will kick off process that could eventually lead to ditching first-past-the-post system in favour of PR. Government sources told the Guardian that Burnham will set out plans in “broad strokes” in speech, underlining his commitment to drawing up proposals before next general election. theguardian.com/politics/202…

Will PR help address some of voters' concerns with the political system? Not on its own, people are looking at other things to strengthen trust. ipsos.com/en-uk/the-state-of…

But PR might make politics less volatile. Hear me out. The current system is not handling our fragmented political system well. But as voters continue to shop around & work out strategies, seeing small changes in votes reflected in seats can be an important signal for voters
