Really important development in the erosion of women’s rights in Kuwait in regards to the current review of Family and Personal Status Laws, including adding a law that requires women to have permission from their husband to travel.

Very little outrage when the policy of women’s custody over her children was taken away in favour of next of male kin if she is divorced/widowed. Theres been work on women/girl’s rights but is rarely spoken about outside of Syria & in Arabic & often mocked. We’re pushing through:

Also a policy Syria needs to focus on: ensuring divorced and widowed women retain full custody of their children and not lose them to the next male kin because, again, of discriminatory patriarchal laws.

Absolutely huge if this pulls through. Women should have the same right as men to pass down their citizenship. No child should ever be born stateless because of discriminatory patriarchal laws.

So many people showing their sectarian colours. Those rejecting this because of fear of shifting demographics were fine with foreign fighters receiving citizenship before Syrian women having the same status.

Over 100 at this lecture yesterday. My wife—who is my sharpest critic, since she listens to nearly all my lectures—rated it one of my best. You can watch it via the link below.
Watch my lecture for the Amsterdam Centre for Middle East Studies, ‘The structure of genocide in Palestine’, on 3-11-2026 at 17.00 CET, 16.00 GMT, 12.00 EST. Also viewable afterwards on the same link. hva-uva.cloud.panopto.eu/Pan…

Abed Abu Shehadeh is one of the most brilliant journalists I know and certainly one of the main historians on Jaffa’s history. Calling for equality has a price in a country where whitewashing genocide and normalizing racism can make you a “credible journalist”.
Around 15 Israeli officers, some of them masked, raided the Jaffa home of journalist and colleague Abed Abu Shehadeh, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, at midnight on 3 November. Police refused to disclose where he is being held. Abu Shehadeh was detained in front of his children and family, and forces confiscated his electronic devices and a number of books. Lawyers intervened to establish his location, and lawyer Afnan Khalifa was eventually able to confirm that he is being held at the Military Intelligence Directorate in Petah Tikva. Human rights activists and lawyers said the detention is part of a wider policy of intimidation and fear amid a racist campaign against Palestinian citizens of Israel following the Israeli elections held in October 2026. Abu Shehadeh has written for and published with The New Arab. He is head of the Elected Islamic Committee in Jaffa and a member of the editorial board of the website Arab48, where he also directs the podcast department. He hosts the podcast Al-Midan and is a regular analyst on the programme Inside the Box.

Now is a good time for a geography lesson. Florida is home to a coastal city also called Melbourne. Us Melbournians in Australia are fine. Please don’t be stupid like @Debramessing. In this literary crisis climate, I encourage everyone to read a book at least once in their life

A picture worth 1000 words. Voters in Houston place their “I Voted” stickers on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s memorial. Lorenzo was 52-year-old homebuilder who lived in Houston for over 35 years. He was murdered by ICE in Houston’s East End on July 7th, 2026.

Truly was a watershed moment in American political history and setting precedence of one of many ways the political landscape is shifting
We may look back at Zohran Mamdani’s election as the most important pivot point in American politics since 2016

“If you leave the kids in the neighborhood, then your daughter will not come home anymore because she'll fall in love with a Russian gangster.” Every conservative Arab parent’s fear lol
Albania’s PM Edi Rama: If you leave the kids in the neighborhood, then your daughter will not come home anymore because she'll fall in love with a Russian gangster. Your boy will not be happy to get married anymore because he'll like to play with Chinese toys, and he may marry a Chinese robot that looks like a beautiful, sweet blonde. So it's not a good idea to leave the kids in the neighborhood. The best idea is to keep the kids home.

If the Aus government had a backbone, US elections would not be as consequential to us as they are. But alas, the government has a habit of blindly adjusting its position to accommodate Washington.

It could also alter the political environment in which the Liberals and One Nation operate in. (our foreign policy and political independence should not be at the mercy of American electoral cycles and should be capable of setting its own course,
