How to keep it contagious indefinitely: As soon as a Pokémon gets Pokérus, deposit it into a PC box. The infection freezes while it’s in the box - it will stay active forever.
When you want to spread it:
Withdraw the infected Pokémon.
Put it next to the Pokémon you want to infect in your party.
Battle a few times (it spreads to adjacent party members with decent odds).
Deposit it back into the box before the day rolls over.
Best practice: Infect a couple of weak/throwaway Pokémon and leave them permanently boxed as a “Pokérus bank.”
Withdraw one only when you need to infect new team members, then put it straight back.
This works the same way in Gold/Silver/Crystal and in later generations. Other storage (Day Care in some gens, Pokémon HOME, etc.) also freezes the timer.
