The Binance hacker might have just pulled off one of the smartest moves I’ve seen in crypto.
First, Tether froze $1.5 billion in USDT.
Then Circle froze another $800 million in USDC.
At that point, it looked like the hacker’s money was trapped.
But apparently, he had already planned for that.
Instead of holding the stolen USDT in a wallet, he allegedly deposited it into Aave and used it as collateral to borrow ETH.
Then he walked away.
That’s where the story gets crazy.
Tether can freeze the USDT sitting in the wallet.
But it can’t freeze the ETH he already borrowed.
So now Aave is left holding frozen collateral, while the hacker is sitting on liquid ETH.
And unless the protocol can recover it somehow, he may not even need to pay the loan back.
Two companies froze billions of dollars in seconds.
But someone who understood how to use DeFi may have found a way around both of them.

🚨 October 29 was a major warning for the crypto industry. Two major security incidents. Two different attack vectors. Billions of dollars potentially impacted.
Within hours, both Polymarket and Binance faced serious security incidents.
1/ @Polymarket : ~$2.7M drained
This was a supply-chain attack involving DebugBear, a third-party website monitoring provider.
Attackers reportedly compromised its JavaScript delivery infrastructure and injected malicious code into Polymarket's website.
The script could identify logged-in users, hijack their active trading sessions, liquidate prediction-market positions and transfer assets to attacker-controlled wallets.
• Approximately $2.73M linked to 737 wallets.
• Polymarket's international platform temporarily halted trading.
• Its smart contracts were not the vulnerability.
• Trading resumed, and Polymarket promised to fully reimburse affected users.
The lesson: Even when a protocol is secure, compromised third-party scripts running in users' browsers can put their funds at risk.
2/ @binance : ~$6.3B estimated impact
This incident appears to be much more serious in scale.
Binance's preliminary investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which allegedly gave attackers access to a service container and the ability to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
Interestingly, Binance reported no evidence of wallet private-key leakage.
• Estimated total impact: ~$6.3B.
• Approximately $3B in assets frozen on-chain.
• Tether, Circle and other industry partners assisted with freezing funds.
• Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals.
• Binance says it will cover all losses through SAFU and company funds.
The investigation is ongoing, and a detailed technical post-mortem is still pending.
The lesson: Exchange security is not just about protecting private keys. Internal infrastructure, employee devices, authorization systems and withdrawal controls are equally critical.
3/ The bigger picture
These incidents are not known to be connected.
But they expose two different attack surfaces:
• Polymarket → Third-party supply-chain and frontend security.
• Binance → Internal infrastructure and hot-wallet operational security.
Crypto security must extend beyond smart contracts and blockchain audits.
A project can have audited contracts and still be vulnerable through its website, vendors, employees or infrastructure.
My takeaway:
Self-custody, hardware wallets, strict approval management, minimal trusted third-party integrations and operational security are not optional luxuries.
As crypto adoption grows, attackers are increasingly targeting the weakest link in the entire ecosystem.
The biggest question is no longer just whether a protocol is secure. It's whether the entire system around it is secure.
Stay cautious. Verify official announcements. Never trust unsolicited reimbursement links or messages.
