They are medications that help prevent HIV infection.
PrEP is taken daily before you are exposed to the virus, for as long as you remain at a high risk of getting infected.
PEP is taken after you have been exposed to the virus. It should be started within 72 hours of exposure, but it is best to start within the first 24 hours.
PrEP reaches maximum protection against HIV through anal sex after about 7 days of daily use, and after about 21 days of daily use for vaginal sex and injection drug use.
Both are available free of charge at hospitals.
They do not prevent STIs. Condoms help reduce the risk of HIV and other STIs.
They do not prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Both men and women are eligible to take them.
