A big win for migratory wildlife today! 🦅
Ten countries gathered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to launch CMS' South‑West Asia Illegal Taking of Migratory Birds Intergovernmental Task Force.
Governments and partners have united to confront the unlawful capture and trade of millions of birds each year, like Steppe Eagles, falcons & Sociable Plovers. 🐦

important feedback on the CMS MIKT/Bern C meeting on tackling illegal killing of birds 👇💪 thanks for the excellent organisation @BonnConvention @_Ivan_Ramirez @ClairiePapa and participation @LillaBarabas1 @Bolek_Slocinski 🙏
At this week’s Bonn meeting, the CMS Mediterranean Illegal Killing Task Force united 30-plus countries and observers around a common framework to combat illegal bird killing. 🐦
Delegates endorsed a new survey on poaching motivations, spotlighted Spain’s and UK’s successful specialist enforcement units, applauded Montenegro’s newly adopted National Action Plan and parallel advances in Croatia and Albania, and learnt @BirdLife_News' latest successes and challenges assessment.
The gathering culminated in a renewed pledge for tougher monitoring, enforcement and anti-persecution measures to eliminate this critical threat to migratory birds.

A vital tool for adequate spatial planning. One we are eager our @BonnConvention parties to adopt under the CMS Energy Task Force through our cooperation with BirdLife International.
Innovative solutions!
Day 4 of our 12 Days of BirdLife celebrates the launch of AVISTEP in four new countries, helping the planet's migratory birds. 🌍
Together with DEG Impulse, we rolled out AVISTEP, an open-access tool that allows anyone interested in planning on and offshore wind energy, solar energy, or powerlines, to see the exact impact upon birds across the entirety of each country. ⚡️🔧
This information ensures developers and regulators develop facilities in the most appropriate locations. 📌
Each of the newly added countries – Egypt, Kenya, Laos and Uzbekistan – are experiencing rapidly expanding energy infrastructure that could pose a threat to migratory birds if not properly planned. 🐦

Stay tuned for our 12 Days of BirdLife! 📆🎉

The extraordinary migration of the satellite tagged male falcon Chiuluan2, originating from Chiuluan village in Manipur continues to amaze as he arrived in Mozambique, having traversed an incredible path through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. Chiuluan2 had earlier reached Somalia in just five days and 17 hours, traversing 3000 Kms over the Arabian sea. Following a similar path, a female falcon named Guangram has initiated her non-stop flight across the Arabian Sea after making stop overs at Angul in Odisha, Indravati Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh, and Tadoba Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, highlighting the critical stopover sites that support these birds during their extensive migration. These tracking efforts, led by Dr. Suresh Kumar of the Wildlife Institute of India, provide invaluable insights into the migratory patterns of Amur falcons, emphasizing the importance of conservation initiatives along their migratory routes. Wishing these avian travelers safe passage on their extraordinary journeys.

In an awe-inspiring feat, Chiuluan2,one of the two satellite-tagged Amur Falcons named after a village in Manipur's Tamenglong district has reached its first stopover site in Somalia in five days and 17 hours after flying non-stop and crossing the Arabian Sea. This incredible migration, part of a study by the Manipur Forest Department, Wildlife Institute of India (WII), and local communities, sheds light on the challenges and routes of these long-distance travelers.
Amur Falcons, known for their epic journeys from Southeast Russia and China to Africa, demonstrate unmatched stamina and navigation, including non-stop flights over the Arabian Sea. Incredible !

Learning so much about the great work being done by Parties and stakeholders in this topic. We need to boost their profile and ensure synergies. Grassland species are indicators of healthy ecosystems that benefit farmers and other local communities!
Agriculture intensification, wildfires and exotic species are amongst the top threats affecting CMS Appendix I and II species, including southern South American migratory grassland birds. 🐦
International cooperation is needed! The third meeting of the signatories of the Southern South American Grassland Birds MoU is currently taking place in Florianopolis, Brazil. 🇧🇷
More than 50 participants are reviewing the implementation of its programme of work and agreeing on new actions needed to protect threatened migratory birds in the region. 🌎
