Long thread:
The story and treatment of Marieha Hussain is one of the most alarming, ludicrous and unbelievable I’ve ever witnessed. It is a story of eye-wateringly blatant state racism, media complicity in that racism, police manipulation and cultural incompetence. And it is a story that must now end with the resignation of Stephen Parkinson, the current Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). His position is untenable as he has turned the @CPSUK into a free-speech threatening laughing stock.

These new statistics are shocking, but we’re not surprised. They back up what so many young people have already told us.
And it’s a burden that falls disproportionately on minoritised young people. xitter.cf/ChildrensComm/status/1…
Today I have published new analysis of the strip searching of children - the first full picture of searches conducted by police from 2018 to 2023. It has found that in that time, one child was strip searched every 14 hours by police, on average. (1/5) childrenscommissioner.gov.uk…

It’s so important we don’t forget the children here.
#Safeguarding, #care, #support & #education will all be key. So many children will be scared by what’s happening, especially Muslim children. We have to make them feel safe in communities.

Jacob Hawley: On Drugs County Lines Victims or Criminals?
38 mins into this #Podcast I describe the horrific reality of #CCE

I, like many others, are deeply concerned about inviting children to submit creative writing pieces about #CountyLines. This is a #safeguarding minefield with the potential for many disclosures within pieces. We would never ask children to write about other forms of abuse like this.
The IP disclaimer is also worrying as all submissions become the property of the host business. This is not in any way a trauma informed, empowering approach to story telling. This is exploitative.
The valid critique is rooted in child welfare & is not an attack. To suggest it is, is disingenuous & further evidence of an uninformed approach.
Christina is doing some fantastic work in schools to raise awareness of #countylines & #knifecrime her commitment to her voluntary work using literacy to inform & educate on this topic is equally valuable

There is no evidence that S&S reduces violent crime. An officers presence would be enough to deter violence but the activity they undertake should be better community policing which increases community confidence & potentially intel @NBPAUK theguardian.com/law/article/…

Until now, we have known far too little about children on child in need plans.
My new report published today has revealed the huge regional variation in support from children’s social services for some of England’s most vulnerable children.

Staggering numbers in poverty including over 4 million children. We can and must do better. Work that pays, affordable housing and childcare and, critically, a benefit system that supports those who need it when they need it.

Our learned and beloved elder, Benjamin Zephaniah is now an ancestor.
To call this crushing news is a massive understatement. He was far too young, far too brilliant and still had so much to offer. A loss we’ll never recover from.
RIP Professor Zephaniah.
