The refereeing Liverpool have been subjected to, particularly at Anfield, is genuinely staggering. And Iโm tired of legitimate criticism being dismissed as โsour grapesโ before anyone even bothers to look at the evidence.
Paul Tomkins has researched this extensively, going back decades and some of his findings are genuinely ridiculous.
Consider these stats from his April 2026 study:
โข ZERO opposition players have received a foul-related DOGSO red card at Anfield since 2009. Thatโs 325 home league games without an opponent being sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity through a foul.
โข 3 Liverpool players received DOGSO red cards at Anfield in just 28 games under Slot. More than opposition players received at Anfield in the previous 25 years combined.
โข Liverpool havenโt received a penalty in the opening 15 minutes of a league match with fans present since December 2012. Man City received 14 (!!) in that same period.
โข Liverpool went 305 consecutive league matches between 2015 & 2023 without an opposition player receiving a 2nd yellow. Thatโs 8 years. Home or away.
โข Since VAR was introduced, Liverpool have received just 2 VAR-awarded penalties for fouls. Man City received 11. Liverpool have also had 7 awarded against them.
โข Liverpool received ZERO subjective VAR overturns in their favour before the 28th minute across approximately 260 matches. Man United received 7, Arsenal 6 & Man City 6.
โข Salah averaged just 0.83 fouls won per 90 minutes, ranking outside the top 2,000 players in Tomkinsโ study. Anyone who watched Salah knows how ridiculous that is given how frequently heโs grabbed, pulled & manhandled.
โข Liverpoolโs average foul free-kicks won dropped from around 12-13 per game before Klopp to just 9 after his arrival. Only Sheffield United recorded fewer in Tomkinsโ comparison.
โข Only 51% of Liverpoolโs penalties were awarded at Anfield, compared to approximately 63% at home across the league. Some home advantage, eh?
And perhaps the most damning stat of all:
Of the 56 highly contentious league incidents Tomkins identified against Liverpool in the VAR era, 53 (95%) happened when the match was level or separated by just 1 goal.
These are game-changing decisions. Penalties, red cards & incidents that can genuinely decide matches, title races & entire seasons.
Think about Tarkowskiโs challenge on Mac Allister, รdegaard practically playing basketball at Anfield, Senesiโs handball or Salah getting manhandled every other week without a whistle. Oh, and literally disallowing a completely valid goal at Tottenham (no, YOU let it go).
At what point do we stop pretending this is normal?
And what frustrates me most is how quickly people dismiss the conversation as โsour grapes.โ As if being a Liverpool supporter somehow invalidates the evidence. You can be biased & still be absolutely right.
Iโm not suggesting these stats automatically prove some grand conspiracy, but the disparities are extraordinary. And when you actually watch the incidents themselves, itโs difficult to understand how some of these decisions are even possible.
Weโre talking about penalties & red cards. Literally the most consequential decisions a referee can make. And somehow Liverpool consistently find themselves on the wrong end of them, even at Anfield - especially at Anfield - where weโre supposedly benefiting from this enormous home advantage.
Why shouldnโt that be questioned?
Credit to Paul Tomkins for actually doing the research & documenting this over the years.

It blows my mind when commentators on Man Cityโs Premier League charges say that the alleged conduct was โhighly unlikelyโ. I really just canโt tell whether theyโre being disingenuous or biased to the point of delusion.
CAS unanimously found a yearsโ-long conspiracy to commit the alleged conduct. All 3 arbitrators.
2/3 of the panel felt there was insufficient evidence to say certain individuals in the UAE then fulfilled the conspiracy. But whatโs undeniable is that the intent was there from Man Cityโs exec team.
It also blows my mind that mainstream media outlets donโt bring this up when discussing the case either. The finding of fact was made - itโs not an allegation anymore. Itโs a fact. Made by the court.
In para. 290 of the CAS decision, it is clear.
Thatโs based on the few emails CAS saw and it is referring to:
An email in September 2012 from Graham Wallace (COO) to Simon Pearce (Board Director), CCing Ferran Soriano (CEO);
An email in December 2012 from Andrew Widdowson (Head of Finance) to Simon Pearce, CCing Graham Wallace;
An email in December 2013 from Jorge Chumillas (CFO) to Simon Pearce; and
An email in August 2015 from Jorge Chumillas to Simon Pearce, CCing Ferran Soriano.
That means, CAS made a finding of fact that Cityโs Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Executive Office (CEO), Head of Finance and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), discussed arrangements over the course of 3 years, which sought to subvert FFP - the wrongful conduct the club is accused of.
And these commentators think itโs โhighly unlikelyโ it happened?
In one of the emails, Andrew Widdowson (Head of Finance) clearly states that it did happen. I guess these commentators think itโs more likely that Widdowson (who is now the CFO of City Groupโs New York City Football Club) was lying - for absolutely no possible reason - when he wrote that.
Iโve explained how Man City were able to escape justice at CAS - a mixture of Uefa gross incompetence and highly concerning CAS arbitration irregularities - but they stand absolutely no chance of evading justice at the Independent Commission.
Far, far, far more (crushing) evidence. Independent arbitrators. Lower standard of proof. Itโs merely a waiting game now.
And if all commentators appropriately shared the full detail behind the CAS outcome, and did not ignore what was inconvenient to their narrative, then everyone else would know this too.
Iโm going to say this as nicely as possible - itโs the worst stadium Iโve been to in terms of atmosphere, your TIFO was horrendous too๐
