Insecurity in Eastern DRC: LUCHA Condemns Joseph Kabila’s Political-Military Involvement and Calls for Peace
While the people of Eastern DRC continue to pay the heavy price of armed conflict, displacement and insecurity, the announcement of Joseph Kabila’s involvement at the head of a new political-military movement raises grave concerns.
In a press release dated 21 October 2026, the citizens’ movement @luchaRDC expresses its deep concern over the worsening political and security crisis and delivers a clear message:
🔴 LUCHA firmly condemns the former president’s involvement in a political-military dynamic. Having led the country for eighteen years, he cannot claim to contribute to its recovery by taking a path that risks fuelling armed clashes and exposing civilians to even more violence. No political disagreement, however deep, can justify the resort to arms.
⚖️ Justice cannot wait. The victims of the human rights violations committed during his years in power are still waiting for justice. His status as former head of state does not exempt him from answering for his actions, past and present.
🏛️ President Félix Tshisekedi must also take responsibility. As guarantor of territorial integrity, he must account for the measures taken against known security threats, devote the State’s resources to restoring peace, and renounce any attempt to amend the Constitution to prolong his stay in power.
🕊️ LUCHA calls for:
1. Immediate and effective respect of the ceasefire, in line with the Doha and Washington processes Secure humanitarian corridors in the East, especially as the Ebola epidemic worsens the plight of civilians
2. A truly inclusive national dialogue, building on the CENCO and ECC initiative and supported by the AU and the UN Concrete diplomatic pressure from international partners on those obstructing peace
✊ To all Congolese, at home and in the diaspora: stay mobilised, stay vigilant, and keep defending national unity, territorial integrity and popular sovereignty, non-violently.
