Throughout my life, I’ve observed a persistent pattern in Western commentary and among regional actors — Ethiopia foremost among them — of dismissing Eritrea as inconsequential: a nation perpetually “on the brink of collapse,” if not outright extinction. This narrative is recycled by successive administrations with remarkable consistency, as though repetition alone could substitute for evidence.
What is most striking is the contradiction embedded in this rhetoric. The same commentators who portray Eritrea as a nation ripe for effortless subjugation preside, administration after administration, over an Ethiopia left more diminished than the one they inherited. The question this invites is unavoidable: if Eritrea is truly of no consequence, why does it command such disproportionate and enduring attention from those who claim to view it as weak?
The answer, I’d argue, lies buried beneath the propaganda itself. Eritrea’s significance is not only militarily or potentially economical in the conventional sense, but symbolic — it stands as a case study in sovereignty unbought. Its refusal to be coerced, courted, or absorbed into the patronage networks of external powers sets it apart from Ethiopia and most global south countries, whose recurring instability reflects, in my view, the costs of dependency on Western and Gulf patrons — including the UAE and Israel — in exchange for regional access, leverage, and control.

Norman Finkelstein says "there was no democratic election in Israel" because Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza make up 30% of the potential electorate under Israeli rule and are barred from voting, comparing it to excluding NY, CA, TX, and FL from a US election.

Such periodicals flaunt war warnings and rhetoric about how and why such nations shouldn’t engage in conflict, yet the institutions and intelligence agencies who quietly manage and monitor the situation remain silent about the main actors, and the source of instability — the UAE’s limitless supply of arms and money to Ethiopia that is driving the Sudan crisis and the emboldening of the mad PM (@AbiyAhmedAli) and his fanciful quest for “sea access”.
No one is serious about peace EXCEPT for Eritrea|ns. NO ONE.

Even if #Ethiopia acquires 12 Su-35 4++ generation fighters and S-400 air-defense batteries, those weapons will neither resolve its internal conflicts nor give it a just cause for war against its neighbors.
Everyone knows that invading other countries takes more than military hardware. #Eritrean-Ethiopian history, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and numerous other conflicts remind us that sophisticated weapons alone cannot guarantee victory. Courage, determination, and the conviction that one is defending and fighting for a just cause remain essential.
What just cause does Abiy have for claiming #Eritrea’s and his other neighbors sovereign coastline? None. Ethiopia’s desire for access to the sea gives it no right to seize another country’s territory. Hubris cannot turn ambition into entitlement.
Nor would these weapons make a confrontation with #Egypt, #SaudiArabia, #Somalia, #Sudan, or #Eritrea any less reckless. Ethiopia’s security and prosperity depend on peaceful relations with its neighbors.
An arms package costing an estimated $4 billion would be a tragic misuse of resources while millions of Ethiopians need food. That money should feed families, rebuild communities, and give young people a future.
#Ethiopians: your neighbors are not your enemies. This is not your war. Refuse to be drawn into @AbiyAhmedAli’s reckless adventure. Choose peace, dignity, and your children’s future.
To the peace-loving people of #Oromia in particular: Abiy claims to act in your name. Make your voices heard: “Not in our name.”

… property tax in PG is the highest in the region, yet they have the lowest quality schools, higher crime rates, shitty public safety protocols and dirty parks and recreations. But hey… at least PG is getting an over exaggerated snow globe!
The property tax rate is exorbitantly higher than other counties, yet other areas have far better public school systems/ratings, safer neighborhoods, cleaner parks, and better maintained roads.

2) If Eritrea is the most autocratic, repressive, insular country in Africa, why is it the one African country not in debt traps, not hosting AFRICOM, not collapsing into jihadist insurgency, the most peaceful and tranquil? Re-reading recycled talking points isn't analysis.

The fact that AFRICOM has recognized Eritrea as the only stable country around the Red Sea speaks louder than words. Sometimes, facts on the ground say more than a thousand political speeches ever could. #Eritrea

U.S. AFRICOM has described Eritrea as one of the only stable countries in the troubled Red Sea region. According to an article in ADF, the magazine of the U.S. military in Africa, #Eritrea is the only country in the Horn of Africa that has maintained peace, underscoring its readiness to contribute to joint efforts for peace and stability in the region.
So… the U.S. is in the business of illegally transporting puppet leaders who fail miserably in tampered elections. 🤣
