I love gimmicks that twist a genre, like Ikaruga’s polarity or SMT Press Turn. But it worries me how often people only praise genre hybrids and gimmicks, without understanding why tried-and-true mechanics exist in the first place. Dragon Quest is "like that" for a reason

I don't know if I care much for "good"/"fair" level design or whether it's even a desirable goal to pursue It's almost always more interesting to have organized chaos that the player has to manage by becoming intimate with a core set of mechanics
