Robert Leshner reveals Bernie Sanders’ take on AI agents is 180° wrong
"Talk about the exact opposite conclusion that Bernie should have drawn, right? Bernie, as somebody who at least on the surface tries to be as pro-consumer, pro public, pro retail as possible, he should have the exact 180° opposite take, which is, hey, it's literally impossible right now for a consumer to figure out how to close a bank account, move their money around, optimize their lives. It's functionally impossible, right?"
"I have just a personal anecdote. I have a GoDaddy account I forgot about that I don't think has any domains in it. I was like, oh, good reminder, I'll just close this account. No domains, no services, I don't have any balance in there, I haven't used it in forever.”
“Even with an AI agent, I couldn't close this old GoDaddy account. I just couldn't. It was like you're going to have to call us, there's forms, the terms of service, all these things are deliberately sabotaging the consumer."

Tarun explains how the "AI financial crisis" could start as a duration mismatch problem
"My thing is, where does the AI financial crisis happen? There's a lot of duration mismatch here."
"Neoclouds and hyperscalers are borrowing at 10-year tranches. They're selling 10-year bonds, 5-year bonds. Then they sell to smaller providers, they sell to inference providers, maybe they sell to hyperscalers for excess capacity. Those are all 1-to-3-year contracts, maybe 5-year at max."
"They're taking this 10-year thing, chopping it up into a bunch of 3-to-5-year contracts, and then charging some premium for that. Then that's their business."
"What are the inference providers doing? You have everyone from Cloudflare down to the small inference providers, plus Together, Base10, Moodle, etc."
"They're taking this 3-year thing and chopping it up and selling it quarterly to SaaS companies and companies that want to do fine tuning, or companies that are consulting companies doing fine tuning, like Applied Compute type companies. They're charging a little bit of premium."
"But if I look at this thing, you have this whole duration curve and you have yield at each duration. If you try to add up all the numbers, there's some slippage that is unexplained. I think that's where that blows out the markets. I have a lot of concern about what is happening in these markets."

Haseeb says the AI disruption we were promised is nowhere to be found: “the incumbents have AI too motherf*cker”
"We talk to a lot of entrepreneurs and they're like, 'oh, our moat's over. How should I internalize this?' My answer is, almost not at all. I think this is a fake story. This is bullsh*t."
"We have not seen any major companies that have had their moats eroded by a post-AI company. There are no examples."
"Nobody could come up with any examples to give me other than some very obscure companies that build compilers. I'm like what f*cking company is that that builds compilers, and that was their moat?"
"Think about browsers. There was all these examples of Opus 4.8 one-shotting browsers. Obviously these were great tech demos. Nobody uses any f*cking vibe coded browsers because they're sh*t, because they suck. They're very good at the first 10 seconds."
Tom: "It's not that people write their own software. It's that the model just eats the software. The thing that is competitive with Photoshop is not vibe coded Photoshop. It's just the image models have gotten so good that why would I ever open Figma or Photoshop? Because I can just prompt the model and generate the thing that I want."
Haseeb: “It is very easy and compelling to say everything has changed. Businesses are now being turned on their head. Moats are eroding. Nothing is ever going to be the same. So far that call has aged incredibly poorly.”
“We are three years post-ChatGPT. We're a full year post Opus 4.5. Where's all the disruption? You can always say 'oh, it's coming, it hasn't happened, you just have to give it time'. But I think actually the thing you have to appreciate, and Jane Street's a perfect example of this, the incumbents have AI too motherfuckers.”
“They have bigger budgets than you do. They have more token spend than you do. And to the extent that they will be pulling farther ahead and their software will be more robust."

Tarun explains how Paper Trade's entire house of cards depends on one token
Haseeb: "This feels to me like it's got echoes of basecoin or basis, where it's kind of like okay, well if it works, it's going to be so big and it's going to be enormous. But it's kind of hard to not face any of the various Scyllas and Charybdis's that are flanking it, you know."
Tarun: "It's hard for me to imagine this thing works if paper, the coin, doesn't do well. If I look at the house of cards of dependency diagram of all the strategies people claim this is useful for, there is one kind of main villain horcrux or whatever that exists. And that's the paper token."
"All these strategies where people are like I'm willing to lose money to get the paper token. How long are they going to do that? If you look at coins that have fair launch but done well, like HYPE, they built a cult pretty quickly."
"A paper trades cult is like around losing money to earn more paper. It doesn't have the same house of all finance thing. There's not some long term thing. Everything is like how can I make money quickly off a thousand X. It feels like the paper token price is going to be too dependent on that."
"Paper, paper hands causing the paper trade to die."

why most l2s failed
"Distribution is the innovation"
many L2s like abstract and blast were also copy-paste jobs with no technological innovation and no economic innovation in the fee model
robinhood chain was the exception because it already had clients and distribution, so it brings real economic activity instead of the "if you build it, they will come" approach
"They have clients. They have distribution."

Is crypto VC going extinct?
"No, I think it's evolving."
"If you rewind the clock back to 2021–2022, there were a lot more VCs who raised money on the idea that they were going to deploy into a crypto venture."
"And the idea was that, well, anybody can do this. You just have to sling some money around and some tokens and everything goes up automatically."
"We're in a very different world now. We're in a regime where there's not that many players that are really institutional quality, and that can really add value to a lot of these projects."
"Most of the easy money in crypto is gone now."

Balaji says anti-tech is the new anti-capitalism, a back-to-the-woods communism rebranded just enough to appeal to both the left and the right
"The other thing I think is gonna happen is this is gonna accelerate the Ted Kaczynski-fication of a large segment of the population, where there's a growing anti-tech move."
"I think anti-tech is the new anti-capitalism. And it's morphed just enough evolutionarily. It's like a virus that's adapted just enough that it appeals enough to the right, that it doesn't see it as exactly communist."
"It's kind of a more fun communism, where it says, look, there's all these crazy things happening with the emergence of all these technologies, let's just throw it all away and go back to living in the woods like men were supposed to."
"It's very similar to the same romantic sentiment that accompanied the Industrial Revolution, for many of the same reasons. People were in the middle of the disruption, everything was changing, and they weren't yet at a stable state."
"Point is, a lot of people are gonna be like, I just want physical coins, I just wanna be offline, I just wanna be a caveman again. The problem is, it's pretty hard to do that in our modern world. So much of the supply chain is gonna be digital."
"The East will deal with it better, 'cause it's got a better social fabric."

Balaji says Hollywood never shows prosperous non-Western countries
"You actually have to go to these places. And the reason you have to go to them is you have to just assume that Hollywood is wrong but you don't know what is right. You can't ballpark."
"And here's why Hollywood is actually deeply wrong. Essentially, Hollywood does not show movies of prosperous non-Western countries. With the exception of Crazy Rich Asians, even Squid Game is showing all the South Koreans killing each other or whatever right."
"The reason is it's depressing for Americans to see other people doing well. So even if you post a video of Chinese glowing cities, they'll be like, oh my God, they just put LEDs on their cities. They don't understand. You'll see this complete cope on social media."
"It neglects the fact that Shenzhen basically didn't exist in its current form 40 years ago. Now they put LEDs on the cities. They built the cities right."
"So the point is that without travel you can't calibrate. Some countries really are bad. You just have to put a lot of miles, and you actually have to see it on the ground."

Balaji says China and Crypto are the only two groups that take the Internet seriously
"I've been thinking about this for years. There's only really two large groups in the world that take the internet seriously, which are China and crypto, because the Great Firewall and the blockchain respectively, those are defensive structures on the internet."
"The Pentagon, by contrast, gets hacked over and over and over again. OPM gets hacked. All web2 systems with maybe the exception of Google and Facebook owners that have the tokens to insulate them are all going to get hacked."
"Web3 systems by contrast have at least a live bug bounty where if they get hacked partially or what have you, then their price drops but they don't totally die. And the reason is they actually also have a social component."
"One thing I think we might have to do is a new social smart contract among blockchains. You use $ETH and by using $ETH you may have to assent to something onchain that says if there's a hack of this hash function or digital signature, then the miners can rewind state to something a week ago. And all transactions are reversed. And everybody has consented to that as part of the terms of chain."
Balaji says Kazakhstan is going to be the next Singapore
"We actually already moved to Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is going to be the next El Salvador, the next UAE, the next Singapore."
"There's a Borat movie which really misled everybody about what Kazakhstan is. Really what Kazakhstan is is its land Asia. You're all familiar with coastal Asia because the way Americans learn geography is America fights wars there. Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Americans know those countries exist, and they're on the coast."
"Kazakhstan is so far inland and it's adjacent to Russia and China. It speaks Russian so it doesn't post in English. Plus Borat made it seem like it's not a great place. Because of that, it's like this encased in amber, absolutely amazing country, which is I would call Singapore but with space to build."
"It has all the quality of governance of a UAE or Singapore. They're number one in the physics Olympiads, tying with China and India. With 21 million people they're tying countries at 70x."
"They want to build startup cities. They want to build crypto cities. Binance is now opening there, Solana last year had a special economic zone. It's got actually a really good crypto law."
"If you want to build data centers they've got the space. Texas is now banning them. Kazakhstan has the lowest energy and building costs in Asia because it's got like 40% of the world's uranium."
"It's got all the digital and all the physical. Singapore is amazing but doesn't have any land. There's countries that have land but they don't have great governments. It's very unusual to have both."
