I’m struck by how much we still focus on the future as being something driven by technological change when the social norms, institutions, and rights that keep us human are crumbling before us.

"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization 1/4

The NYT headline "The Planet is Failing" is a masterclass in passive, apolitical framing. The planet is not spontaneously "failing", as if it's the planet's fault. It is actively being destroyed. And it is being destroyed by our economic system and those who run it.

Maybe I've gotta hand in my #futurist card, but I'm not there for either #meta or #mars. Sort of escapist innit? Let's instead work on fixing the IRL planet we have right now, #amiright?

Excited & honored to have been part of @TEDCountdown with so many #climatechampions, sharing ideas on how the #ocean is a hero, not victim, in the climate story, & an essential part of meeting the Paris targets. Let's make it an explicit part of the solutions at #COP26!

Our leaders say nice words about climate action, but they cannot bring themselves to do the one thing that actually matters: scale down fossil fuel production. On the contrary, production is projected to *increase* in the coming decades. theguardian.com/environment/…

#BREAKINGNEWS We are quadrupling the climate aid NZ provides to the countries most affected by the climate crisis. We will provide $1.3b over the next 4 years with at least 50% going to the Pacific. This means NZ is now providing its fair share towards global climate funding.

It takes a strong stomach to read this story. What this country allows to happen to Black children is a disgrace. As always, there is an economy organized around Black suffering and misery...here it requires filling juvenile beds for the right price.
Three police officers went to an *elementary* school in Tennessee & arrested four Black girls. One girl fell to her knees. Another threw up. Police handcuffed the youngest, an 8 yo with pigtails. Their supposed crime? Watching some boys fight — and not stopping them. (THREAD)
