In beautiful montreal no one gives a shit about your grindset
I grew up in montreal. I love canada. but the best decision I ever made was leaving for nyc I always had an immense amount of ambition, and got constantly clowned for it “why are you working so hard?” “you’re not taking 4-6 weeks vacation a year?” when I worked at a canadian bank downtown, people would line up for after-work club at 4pm on a thursday in finance bro attire on a 70k salary. I’d show up later to hang with friends and still get questioned. those same people grind for an extra 10k raise, or pray for an end-of-year bonus, just to afford extracurriculars montreal is beautiful to visit! if you want quality of life on a budget, it’s also great but Canadian work culture caps your ambition, and in turn your potential

That's funny, I've never heard an economist say that.

the eu supported vucic and his regime and is the reason they lasted as much as they did. the students begged eu to intervene the first year of protests and they didnt gaf so this cant come as a shock to anyone
Don't be gaslit on the Serbian elections. Student List has won on an anti-corruption and free speech platform. It is definitely not pro-NATO or anti-Russian. It is mildly pro-EU, but so was the previous largest party. The main explicitly pro-EU party got zero seats.

The first point seems right. But why select Maidan as the analogue?

The obssesive need of the Western, liberal, stuck in 1990s, establishment to put Russia and Trump everywhere together like it will become some magic incantation. I was born in the 1985 but I get a sense of how they communicated in the Soviet Communist party when I read this.
How fantastic to see democracy alive in Serbia! The Serbian Student List victory in Sunday’s snap election quickly saw 12-year strongman, pro-Russian nationalist Aleksandar Vučić concede. This comes after he allowed convicted genocidal war criminal Ratko Mladić a hero’s funeral last month. Like in 2000 when Serbian student protest movement Otpor defeated wartime leader Slobodan Milošević, young people have come out again to determine their future. And in Brazil too. In both countries, the defeated candidates were Trump favourites.

This is what the newfound "Western friends of Serbia", who are today are exuberantly celebrating the Student List victory, were writing a few short years ago. The Balkans is a backwater not worthy of serious analysis or attention.
My friend who knows a lot about Russia and the Balkans gave me some sage but sad advice. Don’t spend your work and time on the Balkans- it’s useless and a lost cause. The West is repeating the same mistakes they did with Russia in the 90’s. Crime and corruption will continue to thrive and the West doesn’t care about democracy promotion in the Balkans. People can’t even find Serbia on a map and nobody cares. Enjoy your time in the US- you only have one life and youth. Move to California and your favorite Malibu and live your American Dream. If you decide to stay in DC, focus only on Russia- it matters. Forget about the Balkans and help your friends move out of Serbia (which btw I’ve been already doing for 10 years). The sad part is that I already know this but it is good to have honest friends who tell you the ugly truth no matter how uncomfortable it is.
