Personal news: I left @latimes in December after 11 years + joined L.A. Material — a new, soon-to-launch local news outlet. We have a small but mighty team and our site is up! No stories yet but I’m excited to show soon what we’ve been working on. lamaterial.com

The transplant vs. native Angeleno dynamic continues: Bass repeats the dig at Raman as “new to LA.” (Raman moved here in 2013, bought a home with her husband and is raising two kids here.)
I ask @KarenBassLA about voters who supported @RickCarusoLA & @spencerpratt and don't like her performance...but are worried about @nithyavraman? Bass: "Vote for me! You know what you're getting!" Me: "They would say that they don't like what they've gotten?" Bass: "It's a binary choice here. You can go with the unknown. The inexperienced. The new to L.A. The person who is OK with encampments being in front of schools and doesn't like police. Or you can go with the leader who is tried, true, honest...who has made mistakes, absolutely made mistakes but is ready to continue to lead." Via @CNNTheStoryIs

There is a way of seeing this as thinly veiled xenophobia. There’s also a way of seeing it as Bass’ shorthand for saying Raman lacks the grounding in LA and its history + complex racial/class fault lines, which was part of Bass’ criticism over Raman bringing up Daryl Gates in favorable terms.

Am I the only one seeing this thinly veiled xenophobia or…?

Mayor Karen Bass touts endorsement from Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, who is telling L.A. voters: "None of us are happy right now. But let me tell you, that's not Karen's fault. It's the problem of the big guy in D.C."

I was recently jogging on Sunset at night and noticed this insanely bright billboard. Today, @pablogoldstein has the outrageous backstory: how it is blatantly illegal, disrupts the sleep of nearby residents, and reflects the city’s sluggish enforcement of illegal billboards lamaterial.com/p/hollywood-s…

This KTLA segment has sparked a lot of outrage, but a source told us the bill is so high because the ratepayer hasn’t fully paid her bill since COVID. @_hamilton_matt
Outrage from @LADWP customers who say their bills have tripled in recent months. @AnnieRoseNews talked to one woman whose bill is $24K. We at @KTLA invite the LADWP Board to come to talk to us about this. ktla.com/news/local-news/sky…

On the same day President Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, was denouncing reckless drivers on L.A. streets, she was due to complete traffic school for one of multiple distracted-driving infractions.

“Last month, LAPMA made its biggest single political contribution ever: donating $100,000 to a political action committee sponsored by the LAPD officers’ union, which also opposes Raman. In keeping with California election laws, LAPMA promptly disclosed the $100,000 contribution in a filing to the Secretary of State. But there was a problem: The person who signed the paperwork, David Lara, has been dead since 2024, following complications from esophageal cancer.”
Trouble in LA’s deep state: the union that represents managers in LA city government has listed a dead man as their political committee treasurer for 2+ years and failed to disclose tens of thousands of dollars in political donations. And the union is being sued over alleged “financial irregularities” including $3.7M in unpaid dues In today’s @LAMaterialNews >> lamaterial.com/p/la-managers…
