¿por qué me pondría a leer bajo el más perfecto árbol para leer cuando podría simplemente ponerme del otro lado de la calle bajo un imperfecto árbol para leer y ver desde ahí al más perfecto de los árboles para leer?

Slavoj Žižek is getting better and better as a public intellectual. This should scare us. Here's why. Žižek's old problem is that he critiques aimless consumerism while himself being a stupendous consumerist product. In the past, his radicalism has too often been vacuous. Pulling himself out of a swamp by his own hair, Žižek's commentary has become more incisive. But this is not the main reason he is getting better. As a civilisation that's stuck, in Gramsci's words, between an old world that's dying and a new world that can't be born, we are inarticulate about our own predicament. We find it scary to talk about the causes of the crisis of trust and alienation from politics we see all around us. Unfortunately, our public intellectuals are in the same predicament. Many liberal intellectuals have become entrepreneurs for normalisation - they're inarticulate about how Reagan, Clinton, and Obama inadvertently helped cause Trump. Many left intellectuals have become entrepreneurs for narrow identity politics. Many right intellectuals have become entrepreneurs for authoritarian politics. Meanwhile, Žižek has joined a small minority of public intellectuals who can still acknowledge basic truths about our predicament. In a BBC Newsnight interview this month, Žižek argued that - (1) Trump is a symptom, not the underlying problem. (2) The left has abandoned its commitment to a universal political vision. (3) The breakdown of democracy and the global order is not temporary. (4) Trump and Putin together represent a new political-economic ideology. (5) We lack the capacity for collective action to address three great challenges: environmental catastrophe, global war, and artificial intelligence. (6) We are needlessly making a bad situation worse by failing to act boldly and snap out of denial. These thoughts are not extraordinary. They are routine. It is genuinely shocking that Žižek can sound radical by naming realities any educated adult should be able to recognise. Žižek's growing usefulness is a disturbing feature of our times. Above all, it reminds us that a central difficulty of our historical predicament is that it has caused us to be unable to talk about it.

For anyone wondering why this post is being satirized so much, it’s basically because Rieu takes recognizable and emotionally accessible sections of the classical repertoire and presents them as individual numbers rather than as complete works, and this is regarded as rather vulgar. So he’ll play this and then part of a Strauss waltz, and then something from Star Wars, followed by an orchestral version of the Macarena. It’s not really very different from pop music in that it’s just 3-minute ear-worms, one after another. Which is all fine, by the way. His variety-show approach is giving lots of people a sense that there’s something beyond what they hear on the radio. But “Western Christian culture” might be better represented musically by, oh I don’t know, Bach’s Mass in B Minor played by an ensemble specializing in baroque music.
Goosebumps. For all its faults, Western Christian culture is still worth defending.

The real Helen of Troy would have looked like Mamdani's wife, more or less. Despite all the noise about "accuracy" none of the rw chuds would be happy with this casting either.

Partido Comunista de China: "El golf no tiene ningún valor deportivo en absoluto"
China has announced the ban on the existence of golf courses. It requires that all existing golf courses be incorporated into urban community parks and made accessible to all citizens. Moreover, it states that golf has no sporting value at all.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
China has not announced a nationwide ban on existing golf courses, required their conversion to public parks, or stated that golf has no sporting value; new construction has been paused since 2004. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golf_in_C… zh.wikisource.org/wiki/%E5%9B%BD…

His books were readily available to read in USSR. They were studied as any ideologies would be studied. There is a great story Michael Parenti used to tell about a trip he took to USSR. He was with a bunch of American academics, who had been talking down on the Soviets and the censorship they guessed they had been under. When one of them asked a Soviet academic which western theorists he’d read, he rattled off a long list, which both Friedman and Hayek were on. The Soviet then asked the American which Soviet theorists he’d been able to read. And the American couldn’t list a single one. That story is a perfect encapsulation of how real, effective censorship works. You’re not outright forbidden to read. You are, instead, gaslit into it with billions of dollars worth of propaganda, information marginalization, distortion, and lies. This is why you still find people today who believe in cartoons, rather than simply opening their eyes and looking at the real world, who retreat into safe abstractions rather than face the cold, hard reality that we are the most propagandized, socially engineered, and brain washed people in history.
Milton Friedman on Hayek’s contributions: “There is no figure who had more of an influence on the intellectuals behind the Iron Curtain than Friedrich Hayek.” “His books were translated and published by the underground and black market editions, read widely, and undoubtedly influenced the climate of opinion that ultimately brought about the collapse of the Soviet Union.”
