Netflix released a documentary about the legendary late comedian last week. But what I remember most about him is something he said in a 2018 tweet: ‘How could a man be a cynic? It is a sin,' writes Josh Kaplan. thefp.com/p/norm-macdonald-p…

The brutality of this is horrendous. So many good reporters have lost their jobs as part of a drive to integrate AI into the newsroom. Artificial intelligence simply cannot replace the experience gained through years of front-line reporting. I know there is a deep sense of betrayal among some of my former Telegraph colleagues. My heart goes out to them.

I actually think we're overlooking a slightly more obvious link with the Rushdie case
If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity.
@tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202…

The fact this is an open letter calling for the government to reverse a decision which was in fact made by Sally Rooney to stop selling her own books is only exceeded in absurdity by the fact the New Statesman also compares her to Salman Rushdie. Ludicrous.
OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

The 10 minute rundown he gives of Jewish history from the 1880’s onward culminating in the creation of Israel should be required listening for all. He’s done it in talks before but i think around minute 50 in this interview he does a really succinct version.
He's phenomenal and kudos to @havivrettiggur and @breakfastclubam for this great interview and discussion.

The specific case of Sally Rooney isn't an act of censorship.
I am a free speech absolutist. If she wanted to write book called "Why I support Al Qaeda, ISIS, and the IRA" then I'd support her right to do so. Britain should have a First Amendment approach to speech.
However, if she wants to give the proceeds of that book to those organisations, then it is right for her publisher to prevent her (and it would probably be criminally liable too.)
The open letter is cowardly. They should have the courage to state clearly their view: it should be legal to directly fund organisations that unapologetically break into military base.
BTW, I note that none of the signatories of this letter signed the Harper's letter in favour of free speech. Some however attacked it.

As attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank escalate, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is undermining the rule of law, empowering extremists, and putting Israel’s international standing at risk, writes Yardena Schwartz. thefp.com/p/the-violent-sett…
