TODAY—Noboa’s administration has arrested his former presidential opponent, Luisa González. She is the fifth member of Revolución Ciudadana jailed. Other imprisoned opposition figures, including the nation’s former Vice President, bear signs of torture and starvation. Luisa’s supporters gathered this morning to denounce her arrest, chanting “Down with the dictatorship.” Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro also condemned it as a dictatorship. Luisa’s party, Noboa’s largest opposition force, has been banned from elections. Guillaume Long, senior diplomatic adviser to the Hague Group and a former Ecuadorian foreign minister, told me for Drop Site that the arrest is “an exercise in intimidation” and a bid to tilt the upcoming local elections in favor of Noboa’s party, which he says had poor prospects before. “Every time a leader is arrested… paraded in high security jails in orange jumpsuits and with shaved heads, this sends a chilling effect in the ranks of the political opposition,” Long added. The November vote is critical to consolidating the U.S.-backed regime’s grip on power as joint ground operations with U.S. Southern Command, the first of their kind in the region, continue to escalate.

On October 16, 2024, the leader of Hamas' Political Bureau, Yahya Sinwar, was killed by Israeli occupation forces in Rafah’s Tal al-Sultan, bringing an end to the life of a man who became one of the most consequential figures in the Palestinian struggle. In his final moments, wounded and covered in dust, he was filmed sitting in a damaged building, a koufiyyeh draped over his head, attempting to strike an Israeli drone with a stick. The image became inseparable from his final stand. Less than a year earlier, on December 14, 2023, Sinwar had delivered a televised speech in Gaza marking the 35th anniversary of Hamas’ establishment, addressing the Israeli security establishment with a warning of an impending "flood". "We will come to you, God willing, in a roaring flood. We will come to you with endless rockets. We will come to you in an unceasing flood of fighters. We will come to you with millions of our people, like an incessant tide," he declared before a crowd in Gaza. His final moments in Rafah, captured on camera, would later be recalled alongside those words: a fighter facing Israeli occupation forces until his last breath, leaving behind an image of defiance that resonated far beyond the ruins where he ascended to martyrdom. #GazaGenocide #Gaza #Palestine #PalestinianStruggle

This is absolutely insane! The US government is desperately trying to protect a drug-trafficking network of corrupt right-wing political operatives, election meddlers, and assassins in Latin America. Bolivia's attorney general was investigating the US asset Fernando Cerimedo, a criminal who hired hitmen to kill his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Cerimedo oversaw a large scheme of US-sponsored election meddling in Latin America, putting in power right-wing, pro-US politicians by rigging elections, operating countless bots, and spreading mountains of disinformation online. Cerimedo worked for pretty much all of the right-wing, pro-US leaders in Latin America, and he collaborated very closely with the Trump administration. He was given an award in Mar-a-Lago a few weeks before he was arrested, and was photographed with Donald Trump Jr. This scandal was all exposed when Cerimedo failed to assassinate his pregnant ex-girlfriend, and was subsequently arrested. She has since revealed a lot of his dirty laundry, with thorough evidence. Bolivia's attorney general has also been investigating Cerimedo for drug trafficking and money laundering. So the Trump administration got desperate to silence the Bolivian attorney general. First the US government hit him with sanctions, and now it ordered the corrupt right-wing Bolivian government to arrest him, to stop the investigation into the criminal Cerimedo. Now, in Kafkaesque fashion, the US government claims he was arrested because of supposed drug trafficking and corruption. But he was the one investigating the drug trafficking and corruption of a powerful US asset! The US government is the main protector of drug cartels in Latin America.
The Trump Administration stands firmly with President @Rodrigo_PazP and Bolivia's democratically elected government as it takes bold and decisive actions to combat narco-trafficking, systemic corruption, and transnational organized crime in Bolivia. Last week, at the historic Shield of the Americas leaders meeting, the U.S. explicitly reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding democratic governance and security in our region against the destabilizing influence of armed narco-terrorist networks. Bolivia's actions demonstrate the kind of leadership needed to make our hemisphere safer, stronger and more prosperous.

.@TheEconomist says Brazil is "turning its back on the future." What it really means is that neither Lula nor Flávio Bolsonaro is willing to impose enough austerity. Democracy, attempted coups and corruption become secondary details. Fiscal cuts remain the true liberal value. /1

Larry Summers too said in 2022/23 that to bring inflation down we would need at least one year of unemployment above 10%. It came down with unemployment at around 4%. This is a supply problem, curtailing demand won’t fix it
"It would necessarily be painful." Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee says the central bank has reached the limit of any ability to wait out supply shocks, which means higher interest rates will have to slow sectors of the economy that may not be driving up prices. He also sees evidence that the AI investment boom is not "staying in its lane," and cites conversations with businesses who see increasing labor-market pressures for AI-adjacent industries. wsj.com/livecoverage/stock-m…

Salud
