Just read @bellmar's "Kill it with Fire" - a tour de force on tackling the problems of legacy software, both technical and social. Particularly liked the pragmatism in weighing up different approaches and when they work best. Would strongly recommend!

Why did we even have that referendum, when Miliband clearly won here? Paper beats rock, after all.
#OTD 2012. Cameron says the British people must "have their say" on Europe as he pledges an in/out referendum if he is re-elected Miliband opposes a referendum and says it is "going to put Britain through years of uncertainty, and take a huge gamble with our economy."

This issue is obviously timely, but the whole series is thought provoking and worth subscribing to:

Dropped a tiny 0603 capacitor on the floor. Surprisingly I found it. Amazingly it had turned into a completely different component. Even more amazingly, I realised before I soldered it down!

It's as though he treats everything as a potential Seldon Crisis, but without the benefit of Hari's Plan
This description of Johnson seems spot on (from The Guardian)

@mariafarrell Just listened to your Singularity FM discussion, which was excellent. I really like how you centre the importance of stories, and hearing you discuss this and related topics over an extended period was really good!

It made me think about how to create new origin stories, and I realised that some recent political campaigns have been successful not because they contain a new story, but because they refer back to cherry-picked parts of existing ones that we all know.

I suppose that's basically how language works anyway (cue Star Trek Darmok reference), but I hadn't seen it quite in that light before. Thanks for triggering that thought process!

That's a remarkable pivot to such a good product-market fit. Maybe.

Friendly reminder: Myers-Briggs was developed by two white supremacist eugenicists, with the goal of "scientifically proving" the superiority of the white race. When it failed to do that, they remarketed it as a "personality indicator" for the corporate business circuit.
I love how my bank just happens to schedule maintenance over the GMT/BST switch-overs. I wonder if they still have a manual process that they've been meaning to automate, or it is just "an abundance of caution".

Just finished @nayafia's new book "Working in Public". It's really good and the ideas she teases out suddenly made a bunch of things I've seen make more sense. If you are interested in OSS and wider issues, read it. Also, the physical book is lovely too.

Looks like @heroku supports pushing to `main`! Not found in documentation, but a typo gave me the error: remote: Pushed to branch other than [main, master], skipping build. A couple of renames later and I'm happily deploying to main instead!
