AI accelerates product development
One of the most powerful impacts AI has had is to dramatically compress the development timeline for net new products. Three anonymized examples from the past 2 months.
1. Series A company: PM + Sales Engineer prototype a new agentic product in < 1 week by cobbling together multiple off-the-shelf products, sell to customers, deploy this prototype at three customers, and then eng hardens it.
2. Series D company: CEO issues a mandate to build more new products in 2025 (essentially every adjacent product needed by their customers) with their existing team (no new heads) than they have in their entire 6 year history. As of midyear, team is on track to do so.
3. Pre-IPO company: PM, not getting any mindshare from design and eng for a new product they've been pitching for several months, vibecodes over weekend to build v0 of product, gets half a dozen customers to buy into it, recruits an engineer to flesh it out over a week, and deploys it at these customers, all outside the core eng process. Eng finally acquiesces and takes over ownership, and product will now ship to all customers in 2 months (vs never).
It's not perfect (eng must ultimately own it to ensure production quality and scalability, and there are issues using AI with existing products due to AI tools' inability to effectively deal with large legacy codebases), but the velocity enabled by prototyping using vibe coding + various building block APIs, coupled with AI-enabled development, has been transformative.
CEOs: if you're not seeing 1.5-2x speedup in how quickly your product teams are testing and shipping new products, something is seriously wrong.
Just wrapped a super intense week with @shreyas and his Product Sense course. Outstanding content, lots of very hard-to-swallow truths, and a long journey ahead. Would recommend it in a heartbeat!
Superb job to him and his team.

PMs OF THE WORLD REJOICE
PMs: if you have chafed over the pace of product development, especially for hypothesis testing around net new products, AI tools finally give you agency. But:
(a) if you are more of a process / meetings person, those days may be numbered.
(b) you need to bring along eng and design so they don’t feel thrashed. Change management will be critical here. Reducing team size might be the easiest way to handle this.
From VP Product at public company:
“I’m at a pace where I’m building a product or new functionality every 2 days, just by myself and eng keep telling me they need a sprint to move a button.
I’m starting to skip design as well. Yesterday I coded a feed, 1000 lines of code, looks good for 6 hours of work. People had a difficult time to understand it’s not a Figma prototype but an actual iOS app.
It’s mind-blowing to close the loop on a product thought within minutes instead of days/weeks. But it’s going to be a painful change for most engineers and designers, who are used to an orderly structured process.”

a pm proposes moving a button 5px to the left.
the design team schedules a “design intent” meeting to review pixel spacing guidelines, which references a 96-slide internal deck titled “the philosophy of alignment.
afterward, accessibility raises concerns about button discoverability under different screen reader settings, flagging it for usability testing.
performance engineers jump in, warning that subtle css changes could trigger cascading reflows across entire design system, impacting core web vitals.
legal then demands a patent review, citing a lawsuit the company lost in 2012 over a similar button shift.
data privacy gets involved, worried that this minor change could somehow affect “user consent flows” under gdpr.
before moving forward, a product strategy sync is held with vp-level stakeholders to ensure “design language alignment” with future roadmaps.
finally, a cross-functional task force is created to oversee button movements company-wide, chaired by a design ops director. the task force’s first deliverable: a quarterly report on the risks of pixel misalignment.
the button doesn’t move.
SD came out strong! Another great @lennysan meetup in the books.

If your job is making good decisions (which for most of us it is), thinking about work is work.
It might feel like time spent staring at a blank page without knowing what to write is not productive. It might feel like getting up from the laptop and taking a walk is procrastinating.
But those are all parts of the process - maybe the most important part.
No one can sit down and turn on the idea machine every time. No one can always be in flow state.
So you have to learn to give your brain the space it needs to sort out a problem. And you have to learn how to not beat yourself up when you need that space.
The more senior you get, the more this will be true. Your job will increasingly be about making a small number of very important decisions. These are not decisions you can just sit down and resolve on a reliable schedule.
So get comfortable with the messiness of the process.
