Moments I waited a decade & a half to experience…to spend time w/the oldest known wild bird in the world—Wisdom, the Laysan Albatross!
To see her, at least 72yo, resuming pair bond activities w/a new beau, after losing her mate Akeakamai in '21, was such a meaningful treat! 🪶
Banded in '56, by legendary ornithologist Chandler Robbins (N American Breeding Bird Survey fame), she was already on a nest, & at least 5 years old. Since then, she has returned to her faithful nesting spot on Midway Atoll & had ±40 chicks, many of which now nest on Midway, too!
