Having lived on the coast, worked as a lifeguard, sailed and led riverine boat ops, I’ve been an RNLI supporter for a long time and everything I see of their work today makes me proud Britain has volunteers prepared to do what they do and a charity so professional.

Marked Rememberabce in departures at RAF Akrotiri. The silence, announced on tinny loudspeakers and respectfuly observed by all, even the babies, toddlers and children of families travelling back to the UK from their stations overseas, was unusually moving.

Bases, whole towns, used to be built for resistance. Great to see an Infrastructure chapter in the Strategic Defence Review, but as well as money it should prompt more thinking; blending operating efficiency with wartime effectiveness in a military infrastructure renaissance.

A stunning industrial fixture on the landscape of my walk to work, @uniper_energy’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, the UK’s last coal fired power station disconnected from the grid today, bringing 142 years of coal generation in the UK to an end.
