Dear President Trump — a little perspective from Norway. 🇳🇴 Please don’t lose any sleep worrying about whether we are coming to America. I’m very happy here. America has wonderful people, extraordinary universities, remarkable culture and places I would love to visit. Some Norwegians move there for work, love or adventure. But the assumption that we must all be waiting for an invitation suggests you haven’t looked closely at what we would be leaving behind. Let me explain. 🇳🇴 Healthcare that follows us through life. Our access to public healthcare does not depend on keeping a particular employer happy. Losing a job does not mean losing access to our healthcare system. Public hospital admission and inpatient treatment come without a patient bill. Many outpatient services have regulated co-payments, with an annual ceiling for approved charges. We pay for this together through taxation. When someone becomes seriously ill, that collective investment becomes very personal, very quickly. (helsenorge.no) 🇳🇴 Time to be parents. For eligible parents having one child, parental benefits can cover a total of 49 weeks at 100% or 61 weeks and one day at 80%, subject to an earnings ceiling and applicable conditions. Time to recover, care for a baby and build a family. With a place for fathers and co-mothers, too. (nav.no) 🇳🇴 Subsidised childcare. The standard maximum kindergarten fee was NOK 1,200 per month in January 2026, with lower maximums in some municipalities and reductions for lower-income households. Food charges can come on top. Affordable childcare gives children opportunities to learn and helps parents work and develop their careers. (ssb.no) 🇳🇴 Accessible higher education. Norwegian students pay no tuition at public universities, although semester fees and living costs remain. Becoming an engineer, teacher, researcher or nurse should be a realistic ambition for children from ordinary families. (studyinnorway.no) 🇳🇴 Time away from work. Employees have a statutory right to four weeks and one day of annual holiday, with holiday pay based on previous earnings. The normal statutory working-hours limit is generally 40 hours a week; 37.5 hours is a common agreed arrangement. We value having time to enjoy the lives we work to support. Illness already takes enough from people. Income protection gives them a chance to concentrate on recovery. (nav.no) These are some of the reasons I’m comfortable keeping my Norwegian address.
