The biggest mistake tourists make in Japan is dragging a fifty-pound suitcase up and down subway stairs.
Watch how Japanese travelers board the bullet train. They walk on with a cup of green tea, a small shoulder bag, and both hands free.
Where is their luggage? It is already in the next city, waiting for them.
In Japan, the system is called Takkyubin, recognizable everywhere by a logo of a mother black cat carrying her kitten gently in her mouth.
When you check out of your hotel in Tokyo at eight in the morning, you hand your heavy suitcase to the front desk, fill out a tiny slip, and pay about twenty dollars. You can even send it straight from the corner convenience store.
Then you spend the entire day wandering through mountain temples or eating street food with nothing on your back.
When you walk into your traditional inn in Kyoto that evening, your suitcase is already standing neatly in your room, wiped clean, with the handle turned toward you.
In fifty years of handling millions of bags a year, lost luggage is virtually unheard of.
A society runs smoothly when you can hand your belongings to a stranger at a convenience store and know they will beat you to your hotel.

He said he started working on The Name of the Rose at almost 50 because he had a midlife crisis and was worried he'd go crazy and divorce her.
So he thought "Ah I like British murder mysteries -- The Murder at the Vicarage! -- I should just start writing novels."
The rest is literary history. Thank you Renate!

Guy Debord argued that modern life was increasingly being replaced by representations of itself. In 1994, he died by suicide. David Foster Wallace proposed sincerity as an escape from recursive irony. In 2008, he died by suicide. Mark Fisher wrote about the ghosts of futures that never arrived. In 2017, he died by suicide.
Now it is our turn to solve postmodernism.

currently reading. a welcome revisionist history that depicts the Ottoman Empire as a Roman universal empire, rather than just Europe's Islamic Other. looking at it this way leads to some interesting parallels with the superpowers of the 19th/20th century

Holocaust survivor and writer Simon Wiesenthal announces that he is retiring after a 60-year career hunting Nazis. He is now 92 years old and will be 93 next month.
The last Nazi he captured was Julius Veil, who was convicted this year of shooting seven Jewish prisoners.
“I have survived them all,” says Wiesenthal in a press statement. “If there are any left, they’d be too old and weak to stand trial today. My work is done.”

JD Vance's in-laws' names are Radhakrishna Chilukuri and Lakshmi Chilukuri. I wonder if he tells them this stuff, too. To their faces. Or does he just save it for white MAGA rallies?
Truly a racist pathetic embarrassment of a son-in-law to his brown Indian immigrant in-laws.
