Well, an admission here from the premier's chief of staff that redrawing the electoral map is, at least partially, to "level the playing field" with the NDP seems notable.
Total garbage. @DonBraid is literally just regurgitating exactly what is NDP buddies are telling him. Would be nice if he represented both sides of an issue for once.
One of the most respected court of appeal justices in Alberta history is chairing the boundary committee. It’s a lie to say that it’s the UCP. The maps aren’t even available yet (though clearly leaked to the NDP by someone).
In addition, Judge Miller and half the NDP caucus complained that there should be 2 additional seats added to account for population growth. So that was done and left to the independent judge-led committee to figure out how to do it. I assume they have done so.
Further, last election the NDP lost the popular vote by almost 10 percent and still almost ended up winning the most seats. So obviously they don’t want any change whatsoever that could level the playing field.
How do you explain that Don? Did the NDP gerrymander the map last go around under Notley? Was the 2023 election undemocratic too?
The UCP isn’t making that claim because it’s disrespectful of the people - including the judge - who did the hard work of determining those past boundaries.
Your bias is so clear Don. It’s disturbing.

Some pretty wild takeaways from today's electoral boundaries committee meeting:
Lethbridge would be split into FOUR ridings instead of its current two urban ones. Three would combine city neighbourhoods with surrounding rural areas.
Three urban-rural hybrid ridings are proposed along Calgary's northwest and western edges. Springbank gets split up. Kathleen Ganley questioned why the panel was citing GOLF COURSES to justify its boundaries.
Okotoks and Diamond Valley would be split apart, with Diamond Valley paired with Banff. The panel's dissenting members say public submissions overwhelmingly favoured keeping them together.
Ganley says Calgary and Edmonton ridings would average 7,000 more residents per MLA than ridings outside those cities. That's a 14 percent difference.
The NDP wanted to put its concerns about the maps on the record. UCP MLAs voted 3–2 to end the committee's review before those motions could even be considered.
The NDP also wanted taxpayers to know how much the panel and its outside consultants were paid. UCP MLAs voted that down too. Ganley says the panel chair gets an extra $5,000/month on top of regular pay.
The UCP says the maps should be debated in the Legislature once they're public. The NDP wanted the committee to scrutinize them now.
Meanwhile, Albertans still haven't seen the maps. The report is due November 2.

At Nenshi's presser on the UCP's Gerrymandering, it came out that the Ethics Commissioner has had to suspend his investigation into ministers accepting elite hockey tickets...
Because it overlaps with a CRIMINAL investigation!

This is disinformation @TaffWelshBoyo. The late closures were due to late openings and electors still being in line when locations closed. Those individuals are entitled and were able to vote. This happened across the province. No voting places were open past 11:00pm.

A thought for all the campaign staff on the BC NDP, Con and Green teams.
Politics is a volatile and unpredictable business. 8 weeks ago none of this was imaginable. And those in government had “secure” jobs.
Things change on a dime and you all pivoted into campaign, left your families for an intense battle over competing visions.
And now some will lose jobs and others will gain them. It can seem unfair and sudden (and it is) but that’s what the people decide.
Know that even though you are all doing political jobs - you too are public servants. We don’t say that enough but it’s true.
Our democracy depends on well functioning political parties and the staff who make that happen.
Thank you all for your service, whether you won or lost.

Congratulations to @LDoerkson on becoming B.C.’s next premier. Serving this province has been the honour of a lifetime. I am so proud of the progress we've made and everything we've done together to make B.C. a stronger, fairer, more caring place. Thank you, British Columbia.

While Albertans were focused on last week’s referendum, the UCP government quietly released its long-overdue year-end financial reports — more than 100 days after the June 30 statutory deadline.
The timing deserves scrutiny. So does the delay.
These reports are not optional reading. They are essential public accountability documents that tell Albertans how their money has been managed, where it has been spent, and whether the government has met its financial obligations.
Why were these reports delayed, and why has there been so little public discussion about it?
Albertans deserve transparency from their government, not just when it is convenient, but especially when it isn’t.
Read the reports yourself and draw your own conclusions:
