A majority of adults in cohorts from the United States and from the Amazonian Basin in Peru have been exposed to #astrovirus VA1, a novel virus that causes #encephalitis in humans. @abjanowski journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128… @ASMicrobiology #mSphere
One virus you didn't know you've been exposed to is the virus I'm studying, astrovirus VA1! We just got our new paper published in mSphere. In St Louis, most adults (>75%) have protective neutralizing antibodies to VA1, with most of the infections occurring during childhood.
And when we studied blood samples obtained from very remote villages along the Amazon River in Peru from over twenty years ago, most people had also been exposed.
So happy to see all my friends and colleagues have their turn to get the vaccine! Today was my privilege to receive a dose, as I get to finish 2020 spending time with all the sick kiddos in the hospital #wereinthistogether #covidvacccine #thisisourshot
One new infographic for this week, my more comprehensive "infographic" should be ready in a few weeks!
