A device PIN is a short local code (often numeric) that unlocks your phone or computer. It stays on the device and is never sent online. A password is usually longer, checked by a remote server, and can be phished or leaked. With passkeys the PIN only unlocks the private key on your device—the website never sees it.

Very exciting to update this chart with the 2025 data!
Millennials at age 40 have about 60% more real net worth than Boomers did at age 40, and almost 100 percent more than Gen X
THE 2025 FED SCF DATA HAS FINALLY BEEN RELEASED!!!

Interesting that the music business has almost recovered to its 2000s peak but it’s all being driven by live performances. Streaming is tiny compared to the physical medium it replaced.

Can the arts business model survive AI? Perhaps the best guide is to look at how the arts survived past tech revolutions
Take music—internet piracy and then streaming killed the lucrative CD market, but musicians mostly saved their jobs by focusing much more on live concerts

Something worrisome I have noticed about AI, whether GPT or Claude, is that, when asked to evaluate a text, it really exploits the author’s own intellectual honesty.
Prudence, caveats, and so on are used by AI to identify weaknesses and dig into them.
If academic referees use AI, this could be counterproductive.

The other thing about Astra is that it outperforms GPT Pro in checking proofs. It is the first non-Pro model to achieve that. Also, it led to papers being reviewed first by it and then by @RefineDotInk with few comments back.

I'll be on a panel at the @RichmondFed's Exploring Economics Conference (9/25). This is a free event helping undergrads turn econ classes into a real career path.
Free lunch, virtual option for the keynote + panel. Registration's open, but spots are limited!

Some thoughts after teaching economists and central bank practitioners about AI over the past two weeks. First of all, while there’s obvious selection bias, people are very enthusiastic and really want to learn this stuff. At the same time, I think there is a mismatch between what people are being exposed to and what they actually need.

Korean studies scholar published paper with hallucinated citations, and now gives absurd explanation.
How do fabricated citations enter Google Scholar? It's just a search engine, so seeing something on Google Scholar is predicated on it existing.

Very disappointed to see that @AramHur's latest paper in @koreaobserver has six completely fabricated citations.
Academic integrity matters, people.
A short 🧵
Incredibly inspired by this paper from @aboutJoy and her coauthor. It is by far the most comprehensive and in-depth research I’ve seen on this topic. It really made me realize that my current project is just scratching the surface!
So much to learn from this.
Language models increasingly make decisions that allocate real resources. When the human principal has not specified every tradeoff, what preferences govern the choice?

New newsletter: CHANGE ALL YOUR PASSWORDS *NOW*
Cybersecurity expert @alexstamos predicts that the next two years could be chaotic, as open-weight AI models with advanced cyber capabilities get into the hands of hackers, turning Grade C scammers into Grade A hackers; and allowing bad individuals to do the kind of work previously only possibly by large teams.
Phishing attacks will become more sophisticated and more common, putting individuals at risk, and mid-tier companies with inadequate code and IT will cough up username-password combinations at an accelerated clip.
The time to up your password game—and to get your parents and older relatives to up their own—is now.

My new book Causal Inference: the Remix comes out in two weeks (Aug 25). It’s with Yale University Press like the mixtape had been. And it’s basically the 2nd edition too, but it has a different title — go figure. The online version is now up!
