R.I.P, One of the great US diplomats of the 20th Century, instrumental in alia in getting Stingers to Afghanistan to fight the Russian invasion. A rate diplomat for whom values outweighed expediency and career.
My condolences to Michael @abramowitz

"We were saddened to learn of the passing of Ambassador Morton Abramowitz, who served as the seventh president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace from 1991 to 1997. During a long and distinguished career in diplomacy and civil society, he made important contributions to American foreign policy. He served as U.S. ambassador to major countries under presidents from different parties and reminded us that the fate of people around the world affects American interests and prospects for a lasting peace. At Carnegie, his many contributions included creating the Carnegie Moscow Center in the early 1990s, mentoring future leaders in international affairs, and constructing Carnegie’s headquarters building in Washington, DC. His life embodied a spirit of practical engagement with the world to advance the worthiest goals, and his legacy lives on at Carnegie, inspiring those working to reduce international conflict, advance cooperation, and strengthen democracy." - Tino Cuéllar, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

RIP Morton Abramowitz, a three-time ambassador and diplomatic giant who fought for humanitarian causes and advocated arming Afghan rebels with the Stinger missiles that eventually helped drive out the Soviets. washingtonpost.com/obituarie…

Four years ago today Maria Kalesnikava, one of the leaders and symbols of the Belarus protests, was abducted in Minsk by Lukashenka’s security services. She was later sentenced to 11 years in prison.
She is held in complete isolation, denied medical care, and deliberately starved in prison. She is down to 45 kg. She is gravely ill. No one knows how much time she has left.
Maria Kalesnikava must be freed now—if necessary, by an international prisoner exchange, like we were last month. Today, it is no longer only a question of unjust imprisonment—it is a question of life or death.

Vladimir Kara-Murza kept the faith while enduring an unthinkable, wrongful imprisonment in Russia for over two years.
He and his family never gave up.
Let that be a source of inspiration for us all.

Somebody whistled the National Anthem at the O’s game?!

🇺🇦 It has been >450 days since US Congress passed legislation to support Ukraine in defending its people, sovereignty, and democracy.
We urge the swift passage of additional aid as soon as Congress returns from recess next week.
If the US abandons Ukraine now, it will only empower Putin and other autocrats’ authoritarian agendas.
When Congress returns from recess in two weeks, it appears Ukraine aid will be first on the agenda.
I outline the four ways supplemental aid for Ukraine could finally pass through Congress. Read my latest in @ACEurasia’s #UkraineAlert 👇atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/uk…

Grateful to the Russians protesting against Putin's criminal policies today. We expected nothing from these 'elections'; dictators don't relinquish power willingly. What to do? Increase pressure & support 🇺🇦. We'll continue strengthening our Belarusian dem. movement & resistance.

Yesterday's attack on @leonidvolkov in Lithuania illustrates the dangerous consequences that Russians in exile face for their outspokenness against Putin's authoritarian regime.
The brazen attack against the closest associate of the late Alexey Navalny occurred days ahead of the presidential election in Russia and is the latest example of the Kremlin's campaign of #transnationalrepression.
Our research documents that Russia was responsible for 18 direct, physical incidents of transnational repression in 2023.
We wish Leonid a quick recovery and applaud the Lithuanian authorities’ commitment to hold the perpetrators of this attack fully accountable.
Navalny ally Leonid Volkov called the hammer attack he survived on Tuesday a “gangster-style greeting from Putin.” Lithuanian anti-terrorism authorities are investigating the assault. Navalny’s spokesperson said there may have been two attackers. Details:
