My PhD supervisor, David Penny, passed away earlier this week and I've been reflecting a lot. He was a titan of evolutionary biology and science, both inside NZ and globally. He was also just one of the best human beings I've known.
Two fantastic, fully-funded PhD opportunities at @UniofNottingham. Both include labwork in @UoNBiosciences @PlantSciNottm Ancient & Environmental DNA Lab (ÆDNA) + international travel. Training in new techniques in a supportive, interdisciplinary research environment! 👨🏾🔬👩🏾🔬🎓🧬🧪
1. Using sedaDNA to reconstruct Indigenous Australian plant use. Student based in my lab @UoNBiosciences + working w/ @MarianiMichaela @UoNGeography. Apply at jobs.nottingham.ac.uk/vacanc…. Closes 30/11/23. 🌾🌻🦘🇦🇺🌏🧬👩🏾🔬
2. Using eDNA & sedaDNA to assess environmental impacts in Brazilian Pantanal. Supervised by the fabulous Lisa Yon @NottinghamVets + working with my lab @UoNBiosciences, @JackHLacey @BritGeoSurvey & others. Apply at envision-dtp.org/2023/reveal…. Closes 10/01/24. 🐟🐮🌿🇧🇷🌏🧬👨🏾🔬
You're very welcome @Alison3ee! Great to have you visit @UoNBiosciences, UK as we continue to build eDNA links between UK & Malaysia campuses! 🧬🧪🌱🌊🦞🐠
Finally visited University of Nottingham's own ÆDNA lab. Positive pressure, periodic UV sterilisation, compartmentalised processes. It's a dream! Thanks @aclarkenz for an amazing facility!
Wonderful visit to #GreenUnseen, @LakesideArts. Very pleased to loan 10 herbarium specimens from @UoNBiosciences incl. an elder from 1891. Launch event 2pm, Wed 18/10 – all welcome! Exhibition runs till 5/11. @UoNLifeSci @UoNGeography @MarianiMichaela @susieoftraken @A_J_Wills

Using my 25 yo dissection kit from first-year vet sci @MasseyUni, NZ to strengthen herbarium specimens before they are exhibited @LakesideArts @UniofNottingham. It's true that education takes you in some unexpected but wonderful directions.

My lab @UoNBiosciences is very happy to join N-MESH, which brings together facilities & expertise across @UniofNottingham & wider region to support materials, environment & heritage research. Lots of new opportunities to apply aDNA/eDNA!
Today we were delighted to host the launch of the new #NMESH Laboratories network @UniofNottingham and beyond. #NMESH is the brainchild of Dr Holly Miller from @UoNArch. Huge thanks to @ahrcpress CResCa funding and @EngagedArts_UoN for kickstarting this initiative.
Delighted to have been awarded @LeverhulmeTrust grant with @MarianiMichaela to reconstruct food production systems across SE Australia throughout the Holocene 🌻🌾 A PhD on #sedaDNA in my lab/ÆDNA @UoNBiosciences will be advertised in due course. Informal enquiries welcome now.
Celebrating yet another grant success ! I am so pleased to report we were awarded a Research Project Grant by the @LeverhulmeTrust to uncover the past spatial extent of native food plants across southeast Australia 🌏 @NottsPollen @UoNGeography

Great start to #SEBSOE23 with workshop by Thara Samarakoon @EmoryHerbarium. Themes of rescuing, curating and growing herbaria. Plus, I mounted my own elder (Sambucus nigra)!
Very proud that my lab has achieved its bronze @LEAFinLabs award! A way to go with improving sustainability & efficiency but we're getting there. A good team effort by @UoNBiosciences staff & students! 🍃🧬🧪👩🔬👨🏽🔬♻️
