Before progress can happen, we often have to say goodbye to places that have meant so much to our community. Today marks the end of an era as the longtime home of the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard comes down after serving residents for many decades. For generations, this building was far more than bricks and mortar. It was a place of compassion, hope, and support for thousands of individuals and families when they needed it most. Countless volunteers, staff, donors, and community partners helped make that possible, and their legacy will never be forgotten. While it’s bittersweet to see this familiar landmark disappear, its mission continues stronger than ever. A great deal of work happened behind the scenes with Mona Fortier, the City of Ottawa, and many dedicated community partners to make this vision a reality. I also want to recognize former Executive Director Erin O'Manique , whose leadership and dedication were instrumental in moving this project forward over many years. As the organization enters its next chapter, Executive Director Michelle Lemieux will help lead the completion of this exciting transformation. Today, the organization is proudly operating as the Gloucester Emergency Food Centre from its temporary location at Beacon Hill Mall, while a new, purpose-built facility is constructed. The new development will include a modern food centre alongside much-needed affordable housing for seniors, creating a lasting investment in our community. Thank you to everyone—past and present—who has contributed to this incredible organization. Buildings may come and go, but the compassion, generosity, and commitment to helping our neighbours will always remain. Here’s to honouring the past while building an even stronger future. ❤️
