HEARTWARMING❤️🩹: Kirby Smart yearns for the days when the players, who are the engine of a billion dollar industry that allow him to make 13 million a year, would receive 0% of the profit rather than the 14-15% they receive today.
NEW: Georgia's Kirby Smart on players getting injured more in the SEC compared to previous years:
"I don’t know that the players are any different. I think about the teams we had in 2021 and 2022, how physical they were and how they practiced. We can’t even get close to that now. Is it different culture that guys don’t want to as much? I don’t know. They were definitely hungrier, because there was a motivation to make it. A lot of these guys, honestly, they make more than I was making until I was 40. So it’s just a different day and age."

I don’t know anything about NFL analytics but the algo’s been giving “optimal pass rate” discourse on my tl.
My take is that way too many people are using EPA for questions of strategy change despite EPA being policy-dependent.
It’s a dynamic programming problem.

Team A has more players, but their movement is limited.
Team B has fewer players, but has the freedom of the pitch.
Which challenge would you prefer?

My contrarian view is if slope of (pass efficiency/pass%) and (run efficiency/run%) are similar then any arbitrary pass percentage will yield similar result regardless of how passing is more efficiency than rushing
I think the fact it "stares us in the face" is why I am less in the camp "it's obvious we should be passing MUCH more".
It doesn't even take understanding EPA... Every coach in the league knows yards per play is much less in the run game.
I think someone in analytics should good faith steelman trying to answer the question "why do we run so much" and see what we find

Where should the tackler look? When? Why?! Are your tackle drills actually teaching them this key aspect of skill?
In this video from the free @learntotackle American Football course, we round out our discussion on direct perception, building on the concept of Tau, potential limitations for perception and decision making in sport, and what this means for football coaches.
Key learning points
- Tau = time to contact = action gaps = something to coordinate our movement to
- The picture of optic flow is always moving.
- Not all aspects of the optical array are created equally. We need to FOCUS.
- Key information isn’t always available, so athletes need a place to rest their gaze.
- Scanning matters too- don't focus so hard you miss the gorilla.
- Athletes need to focus, scan, rest and switch between those states.
- You can’t verbalise gaze and focus into an athlete.
- Good drills anchor movement to external information, give clear goals, and show success or failure without needing the coach to say so.
- Depth builds the link between information, action gaps and action.
- Breadth teaches which cues stay constant across situations.
- Stop running the same unopposed drills day in and day out.

A constraint is any boundary or feature that shapes how a body searches for a movement solution to reach a goal (Newell, 1986)
there's nothing to search for when the task only has one answer!
Be brave enough to remove constraints
Indy today fellas. I’m gonna lube up a ball, you’re gonna get on all 4’s and spin in a circle as fast as you can - DONT TOUCH THE BAGS, and then run thru the medieval torture device

An athlete can improve within a program while simultaneously having their future developmental possibilities narrowed by that program.
That's the tension I find most interesting.
And it leads to another distinction:
Development isn't simply the accumulation of capabilities.
double fall back fits creating a leverage advantage for the OFF. falling back safety now has to fit backside B gap based on the front techniques, creates the lane needed for TD

“The more we learn the more we evolve which leads to more deep learning/🤔 on what's important.”
Perhaps one of the 💪indicators that a developmental program is learning isn't how many answers it has accumulated, but whether the ? it asks have become more 🤔 and consequential.

The OODA loop is a fantastic decision making framework, but it has some inaccuracies, specifically: the brain is not a computer, skills are not like pre-planned programs, and sporting skill is not the conscious, top down phenomenon we think it is.
In this @learntotackle video, I'll explain why skill is actually an emergent, self-organized relationship between athlete, task, and environment, and what this means for you and how you coach skills like the tackle.
🏈 Wrestling for Football programming drops 1st December. Subscribe to this channel for a special discount when it drops.
KEY LEARNING POINTS
- The brain isn’t a computer. We can’t process all perceptual information, run simulations, and control every degree of freedom in a tackle.
- Skills aren’t programs we select and “push play” on. Strategies overlap, scenarios are endless, and we have to cope with novel situations.
- Elite decision-making is largely autonomous, not a top-down, conscious process.
- Ecological dynamics frames skills as self-organized, emergent patterns that arise from interacting with the environment.
-Athletes are pushed toward one affordance over others by the interaction of individual, task, and environmental constraints.
-Context and individuality matter. One technique or system can’t fit every athlete, position, and situation.
- Practical approach: build breadth of movement options, nudge athletes toward better options with carefully designed scenarios, then use repetition and depth to refine timing, coordination, and adaptability. Let the environment provide the feedback.
