I've been thinking about why modern tokusatsu feel lacking compared to the older ones, and I think this might just be it. The push for toku to only be just an entertainment might make it more appealing to modern audience, but it also make the media itself feel superficial imo.

現代のウルトラマン、特撮はSFである事を求められていないように思えます。ファンが求めているのは玩具の販売促進とエンターテイメント的なストーリーによるシリーズの継続です。そこに政治的な問題提起は必要とされいません。怪獣の存在すら不要だという声も見られます。
