I am excited to share that I will be joining the Department of Biology at James Madison University @JMU as an assistant professor this fall! Looking forward to starting my lab, where we will study floral color evolution, Silene speciation, and plant pollinator interactions! 🌸
Going to do some hummingbird pollination observations this spring, and exploring having backup camera/photos to supplement in-person observations. Curious if anyone has successfully used camera traps/game cameras to capture hummers? Don't want to use regular video cams.

ALT A two-paneled image of a variegated and non-variegated plant from the genus Hexastylis. The plants have heart-shaped leaves with a cordate leaf base and obtuse apex. The left variegated plant image shows leaves with a pale green color spreading from the veins against a dark green background, creating a pale green webbing pattern. The right non-variegated plant image has leaves that are uniformly dark green. Both plants are surrounded by leaf litter on a forest floor.

Colour, UVIVF and UV photo of Lychnis chalcedonica. What the bees see from UV induced visible fluorescence is not different from what we see: approximately nothing.
Plant friends - how have you moved your seed collection? Mine are kept in airtight containers with silica and at 8C. Think 24-48hrs at room temp (or honestly a little warmer…) would be ok for them if they’re kept dry?

I say this every time news of GRFP news come out: many amazing students worked hard and won them. And also, many amazing students worked hard and didn’t win them. Either way, you belong in STEM and we can’t wait to see you shine❤️ – at Durham, NC
