Trad friends be damned, but some major life lessons came my way not from the classics but from Patrick Stewart and Star Trek in the 90s.
Patrick Stewart, who died today at 86, became Professor X and Captain Picard. As a boy, he watched his father beat his mother, and heard the doctors who came to help tell her it was her own fault.
In the video below, a woman thanks him for helping her survive her own abuse, and his answer brings the whole room to its feet.
He grew up in a poor mill town in England. His father came home from World War II a different man and turned his violence on Patrick's mother.
Every time the doctors and ambulance men came, they told her she must have provoked him, that it takes two to make an argument.
Decades later, Stewart learned from his father's war records that he had been suffering from severe shell shock that was never treated.
So he spent the rest of his life working for two charities: one for abused women, in his mother's name, and one for traumatized soldiers, in his father's.
He could have spent his life hating his father. Instead, he spent it helping others. Is that the kind of legacy that matters more than fame?
"The economics of the future is somewhat different. You see, money doesn't exist in the 24th century.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity."

Patrick Stewart thought professionalism meant keeping the fun out of the workplace.
He arrived on Star Trek: The Next Generation treating the set like a serious theatrical production, while his castmates wanted room to joke around. He believed discipline was the standard. Denise Crosby helped him see that his seriousness was becoming its own limitation.
The uncomfortable part is how easily competence turns into rigidity. Stewart was not wrong to care about the work. He was wrong to assume that enjoying the work would weaken it.
Learning to be silly did not mean lowering his standards. It meant understanding that control over the atmosphere is not the same as control over the quality.
Sometimes the person protecting professionalism is the one making the room harder to work in.

Why is 95 year old William Shatner outliving all of his colleagues?
One factor separates Shatner from the rest: he doesn't drink and never has.
The most he'll do is a sip of a drink when someone gives a toast at dinner, and that's rare.
**Basically ALL of his Star Trek colleagues who died natural deaths were regular drinkers.**
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
William Shatner has said he drinks beer. He told Cheese Connoisseur: "Oh, I love beers from all over the world, especially ones that are dark, heavy, bitter, and chocolaty." He also called a scotch-infused stout "the best beer and the best single malt I have ever tasted." yahoo.com/entertainment/…
