I saw someone essentially say that pornographic/lewd Malfoid fanart is good because sex is the point of romance. THIS, I fear, is another example of the way pornography has damaged people. 🧵 That idea misses the entire point of the Malfoid trend at large. To be fair, Malfoid has gotten so big it broke containment and now means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. That being said, I think the vast majority of those who enjoy this trend agree that Malfoid isn’t about sex, it’s about yearning. To yearn for something, to long for it, is to deeply and often melancholically desire it. That sense of melancholy often stems from the understanding that whatever the object of your desire is will be difficult to obtain. Men are yearning for Malfoid because finding a woman like her is incredibly difficult, but she’s worth it. People are writing stories, making art, and changing themselves for the better in an effort to even get close to the feeling of achievement - to get close to her. Making pornographic art in this movement cheapens all of this. The object of desire becomes not the woman, but her body. The way to express this desire becomes not hard work and effort, but masturbation. Looking at images on a screen and allowing yourself to be titillated will poison your soul against improvement, and you will seek to get your jollies off however you can rather than by becoming the kind of man worthy of a Malfoid, or the kind of woman worthy of a Harry. Certainly, it is true that Harry and Malfoid are sexually attracted to each other. It’s also true that the vast swaths of wonderful illustrators in this movement depict Malfoid as sexually attractive. But Malfoid being sexually attractive doesn’t innately reduce her to the point of objectification. Beauty exists, and Malfoid is beautiful. This aspect of her character is a virtue - it’s something that men often find lacking in modern women. To be fair, it’s also a quality that women find lacking in modern men, so there’s blame to go around. But that’s why people have started going to the gym over this trend, in pursuit of beauty. Beauty may also easily be corrupted. Because beauty is a virtue, it goes hand in hand with other virtues - love, self-control, modesty, etc. - and if any of these other virtues are lacking in a person, so too does their beauty. Portraying Malfoid as a loose woman, exposing herself and engaging in all kinds of indecency, makes her less beautiful. It may make her “hot” or otherwise “sexy”, but this is a pornographic debasing of her. Those depictions are not worth your desire. Malfoid is modest, in both dress and in mannerism; of course she is, as the heiress to the Malfoy name. And the people who get the trend don’t portray her as a ditz or an airhead, but as a confident, even prideful woman (it’s worth noting that such depictions have her putting down her supremacist pride in her bloodline and accepting her love for Harry, humbling herself, which is a virtue). Keep Malfoid modest. Yearn for something greater.
They're right. Malfoid is, actually, the perfect example of how much damage pornography can do to men. And women.

There is more going on than simply what is happening to the characters within the story... you are communicating something to the audience. Now, you are of the preference that lovers shouldn't harm each other, especially physically. Whereas I am of the opinion that... the kinds of harm we do to each other in the real world needs an example of forgiveness within media. Transforming sorrow and pain into forgiveness in order to overcome those things and bolster love within the story necessitates SHOWING the suffering, which necessitates making people FEEL angst, suffering and sorrow... as well as it's resolution, which is necessary for the transformative healing process. This is how stories shape people. We've had decades of stories telling people "Nope, if someone harms you, throw them away they aren't worth your time or effort." And that is why we have the world we have today; because we turned out backs on redemptive love stories... And here you are advocating for the story to be less redemptive... because SectumSempra offends your sensibilities. The Passion of the Christ was filmed to offend sensibilities in order to convey the suffering Christ went through for the people of the world. To show his pain and suffering, in order to demonstrate his LOVE of the people of the world. But you can't bear the thought of Harry harming the woman he loves in a moment of conflict and passion with a weapon he didn't fully understand. Essentially communicating to the world the same message we've had for decades.
Some people just don't understand that idea that the "depth" of a relationship between a couple can only be measured by how much they hurt each other when they're at their lowest point... is, in fact, romantasy-goonerism. When they're at their nadir, they build each other up.

The fact that you feel it is irredeemable is precisely why it needs to remain, because the mytho-poetic romance calls for irredeemable sins to be transmuted through labor and suffering into forgiveness. It's a cornerstone of the idea of Forgiveness and Transcendental love that the love... transcends the irredeemable.

YES EXACTLY!!! I just wrote an extensive reply on another chat…. I will just repost what I wrote there right here. I just can’t get on board with keeping the bathroom scene identical if we’re writing a rivals-to-lovers story. By Year Six, if their dynamic and subconscious feelings have already begun to take root, Harry slicing her open from head to toe completely shatters the narrative. It crosses the line from compelling drama into something irredeemable. In canon, Harry and Draco were genuine schoolyard enemies, yet even then the aftermath was horrific. But in a romance, having Harry inflict that level of grotesque physical trauma on Malfoid, the girl he is in love with, creates an emotional wall the story can never realistically recover from. You have to look at Harry’s core morality. No matter how furious he got, he would never have cast an untested, lethal curse at Ron or Hermione, so why would he do it to her? The visual of a male protagonist brutally mutilating his female love interest while she bleeds out on a bathroom floor doesn't read as romantic angst. It reads like sheer cruelty. If you want this relationship to stay viable, the stakes of that confrontation need to be reworked, because as it stands, that is not a hurdle a couple overcomes. It is a point of no return.

I feel like our culture treats romance as backwards. We treat friends who develop romantic feelings to someone they already have an emotional connection with as weird, icky or suspect. But hooking up with strangers who we know nothing about at bars and apps is normalized.
Please, let's just be friends

My HP hot take: Crabbe and Goyle shouldn't be her "friends" They're bodyguards Lucius sent to watch her and follow her to most classes. Her true Slytherin friends for gossiping and casual chats should be Pansy and Daphne. Two unexplored characters who could be her closest friends
Pansy's fancy a little game #malfoid #malfoy
