every time i'm inebriated i try to explain random number generators to my wife all over again and by this point i'm sure she understands them better than most of my students

yesterday she cut me off mid explanation and said "i know. i get it. randomness isn't real. it's a bunch of prime numbers. just skip to your point."

My little sister is going to an extremely Christian university where students who sexually assault someone get community support but students who get an abortion are threatened with loss of housing and expulsion.

i really believe a big part of the reason so many people are fatigued about wearing masks is because there's this weird cultural pressure among covid cautious folks that wearing masks isn't bothersome at all. wearing masks sucks and isn't fun and sometimes it's still right to do.

to be clear i'm talking about tweets like "oh you can't be bothered to wear a little piece of fabric? why are you so selfish?" Wearing masks sucks! There's a reason we weren't doing it before! Shaming people who are tired of it doesn't make them want to make the effort.

our messaging about this has been terrible since day one. saying wearing a mask is easy and doesn't bother anyone just makes us straight up sound like we are lying and fuels anti mask talking points.

Had a dream I got fired from my department because it was restructuring and needed to fire 3 out of the 6 people working in it and the dept put together a committee of 3 people to decide who to keep and they kept themselves
