If you want a break from election news, I wrote a thing for @sciam about the bad side of beekeeping. @SaveWildBees scientificamerican.com/artic…
We found that virus infections in queen bees inhibits egg laying, shrinks ovaries, and predicts supersedure. Looking forward to talking about this research at ABRC this week, along with some new stuff about viruses & queen pheromones! nature.com/articles/s41598-0…
Our newest paper: Climatic factors predict honey bee virus abundance and prevalence, but not always in the ways we expected nature.com/articles/s41598-0…
My foray outside the world of honey bees continues. Our new paper is out, comparing proteomes across reproductive stage transitions of ant, honey bee, and bumble bee queens.

Just tried a phenol-based throat spray (for numbing) and it feels like I have a mouth full of Trizol 🥴

A great collaborative effort to collect remarkable data to find the effects of climate on honeybee health.

That horrifying moment when you spot a typo in that graphical abstract you made hastily at the end and you wish even harder that graphical abstracts were not a thing cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S…
Happy to see our new paper on climatic predictors of honey bee pathogens out in the world in @PLOSClimate.
We used a dataset of hundreds of samples from across Canada (project @BeeCsi) to see how temp, precip, and wind predict pathogen abundance journals.plos.org/climate/ar…
Our review on honey bee pathogen and pesticide resistance is out in the world in Physiology. journals.physiology.org/doi/…
Happy to see this getting some attention. Last spring, I saw one location in the Lower Mainland with so many queens emerging it was hard not to step on them. It was insane. vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/0…
I’ve always loved bumble bees (more than honey bees, sorry not sorry) and now I’ve expanded my research to include one of them. My first publication from this era is out now on rethinking the reproduction-immunity trade off hypothesis:

It was a pleasure to be involved in this project and learn a little more about the power of metagenomics! It amazes me how much ground we have yet to cover in understanding these little creatures
The queen caste has a special lifestyle and diet, and so is its microbiome comprising only a few bacterial species, but also phages. One of our findings: failed queens had more phages and an altered bacteria/phage ratio. Check out our paper to know more! journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…
Despite how @ethanbaron chose to represent my opinion, I am NOT recommending that beekeepers go out and get these things. Here is my full statement 1/n
