📢 Consultants wanted for the MAPPING Study 📢
Researchers at the University of Glasgow are exploring how personality traits and attitudes to risk influence decision-making in emergency general surgery.
They are looking for consultant surgeons involved in emergency general surgery to complete a survey exploring decision-making through hypothetical emergency surgical scenarios.
In addition, they wish to recruit anaesthetists, intensivists and geriatricians to compare differences in decision-making between specialties.
The survey is split into two parts and takes approximately 30 - 40 minutes in total. It includes:
✏️ A personality and risk-attitude questionnaire
🩺 Specialty-relevant hypothetical emergency surgical scenarios
Participants receive their own personalised personality profile after completing Part 1 and collaborative authorship will be offered to eligible contributors who complete the survey.
Survey closes on 31st October 2026.

Surgery is a "wicked" environment: feedback is delayed, noisy, and often biased. My essay on why experience doesn't always equal mastery, and how to learn when the feedback loops are broken.

Thanks to everyone who's completed this! Sadly, we don't have a single respondent from Northern Ireland - would be nice to have views of clinicians from across the UK. If you know any NI-based IBD physician/surgeon/CNS, please share. Will close study on 31.7.25
Need another 15-20 response. Please complete & share if you have any experience in treating IBD as a surgeon/gastroenterologist/IBD CNS or post CCT Fellow:

The current best practice is to clip right colon polypectomy >20mm to reduce delayed bleeding. This is one of my favorite tools , @bostonsci Mantis Clip, performing clip-and-drag button closure technique (widest part first to make 2 smaller defects).

It’s an unpopular opinion to hold these days but I absolutely agree with this. I don’t presume to call my patients by their first name either.

Why is it so hard to let go at the natural end of life?
My article in The Sunday Post looks at why trying to prolong living, however well intentioned, can actually just prolong dying.
The antidote to our fears is found in realism, honesty and openness.
