Journalists will sometimes be told, confidently and incorrectly, that they’re breaking the law.
That happened this week when Rep. Andy Harris threatened to refer Cat Murphy, a student reporter with the University of Maryland’s @CNSmd, for prosecution for recording his press briefing. Maryland’s all-party consent law doesn’t apply to public press events, and Murphy kept doing her job.
To help other student journalists prepare for these situations, we explain what state recording laws actually say, explore where the First Amendment comes in, and offer practical tips for handling them.

Big milestone for California AG Rob Bonta's office: They've hit 100 lawsuits against the Trump admin, according to the @latimes. (Bonta has been known to keep updating the number at pressers about the state's litigation against the fed gov.) latimes.com/politics/story/2…
This also has... nothing to do with Kansas City...
The @KCStar devalues the work of its real writers and editors and the news product itself by churning out AI slop. teapawt.net/KCStar/status/21104204…
With President Donald Trump in office, red state AGs don't have much of a reason to sue the fed gov anymore over environmental policies. They're now turning to challenging their blue peers. I take a look at this round of litigation and what led to it for @BLaw:

dogs > all
A surprising new study finds that people who sleep near their dogs don’t experience disrupted sleep. If anything, the University of Toronto researchers discovered, we humans are the ones disturbing our dogs’ sleep. nbcnews.com/health/health-ne…
Does anyone know when and why so many public transit riders appear to have collectively burned their headphones/earphones and also, is there a way for us to... get them back?
Really interesting report and particularly interesting to look a the regional breakdowns within it.
🚨Utilities requested a new Q3 record of $4.5 billion in rate hikes, bringing the year's total to $23.1 billion requested.
I broke down what drove these requests in our newest issue of "Current," out this morning. Here are a few key takeaways (1/4):

NY already has a year-long moratorium on permitting large data centers, but in at least one NY town, locals want more. The @cornellsun reports that Lansing will draft a ban on data centers, something most of the > 30 ppl who spoke at a recent meeting want. cornellsun.com/article/2026/…
This week marks my one-year anniversary with @BLaw! Cheers to a year in a job and on a beat I absolutely love with such great bosses and awesome colleagues, many of whom have become great friends. Bring on year two!

New: Last night at 9:15 pm, Johnson held a meeting with members about suspending the gas tax, something Andy Harris was pushing for. It quickly delved into chaos.
Rep. Sam Graves brought in a printed out Andy Harris tweet from 2022 where he opposed suspending the gas tax, something Harris was now advocating for.
Harris got livid.
"This is fucking war!" he yelled slamming his hands on the table. "This is war!"
Rep. Clay Higgins then stood up and called Graves a "disrespectful fool."
Sources described it as one of the craziest meetings they've witnessed.
More from inside that meeting:

Quite a story and notably from one of the best, if not the best, journalists covering Missouri politics.
Federal prosecutors say Siddharth Jawahar agreed to pay Jeff Roe's Axiom Strategies $10,000 to secure a favorable newspaper article and a sentencing letter from Congressman Sam Graves in an effort to influence the judge. #moleg #mogov

Newsy update here from @kelseytam on DOD's stalling of wind permits. A recent legal filing from the Trump admin claims it has “resumed processing wind energy project applications.” But the document doesn’t identify a single project that’s actually moved through the review
