Experience of diagnostic services and the acceptability of tests are often conflated, but should be considered separately. While experience of services should be measured routinely, test acceptability should be embedded into test development.

We outline what patient experience of diagnostic care looks like, adapting a framework proposed by NICE. Assessment of patient experience of elective diagnostic services should be incorporated into routine patient surveys to support quality improvement and patient choice.

I've just received a request to arrange an ultrasound scan on a patient from a podiatrist. Why don't we allow experienced health professionals to order investigations when they are needed? This would be better for the patient, as well as reducing workload for primary care.
