1/3 - Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, accounting for 1 in 5 cancer deaths. Prognosis for lung cancer is poor compared with other cancers, largely due to the high proportion of cases detected at an advanced stage when treatment options are limited

lnkd.in/eWz9jqAB In the next year about 50,000 UK men and women will face similar challenges. Only 1 in 10 will survive. A key reasons is that in its earliest form #lungcancer can be asymptomatic - hence most not detected until more advanced when survival drops to 5%-15%

Dr Porter discusses that while a #CT scan is currently the definitive test and can detect small #tumours, the scans often pick up other changes known as “incidentalomas” which may be innocent but can require follow up monitoring.

He reports that “as many as one in ten scans will turn up these incidentalomas, putting further pressure on radiology services and subjecting the patient to unnecessary tests that may be harmful”. He adds that CT scans also subject patients to #radiation which carries risks too.

A simple blood test that can measure the presence of a biomarker highly associated with Stage 1 lung #cancer can provide an additional tool in the clinicians’ arsenal to detect lung cancer early and as such, increase patient survival rates. #CIZ More info: lnkd.in/dvRFuuUm
