New York datapoint: in the last election for governor, Zeldin signs abounded in my heavily Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. This time Blakeman signs aren’t there, including on Zeldin lawns. Surely Hochul OKing Trump’s school tuition tax credit for NY has something to do with it.

Part of the problem: elite white parents are convinced that there are only a handful of high schools worth considering. There are 500+ high schools in NYC, and we easily came up with 12 very good options--but they were majority-minority, so white parents too often rule them out.
Bloomberg gets named (correctly) by @michelleinbklyn for ushering in a choice-oriented high school system but it was de Blasio who later wiped away remaining vestiges of local zoning in the name of equity. Leading to more inequity. nytimes.com/2026/10/19/opini…

My kid is out sick today and I was really impressed to see @NYCMayor’s team connecting the dots between school absenteeism and housing insecurity in this message I got from @NYCSchools. So many kids miss out on learning due to the challenges referenced below.

News from today’s court hearing on whether Columbia can continue to keep campus closed: city government has officially changed its position, saying campus should be open. Columbia has not changed its position, saying campus should be closed. Plaintiff lawyer - representing neighbors who want public access - wants to withdraw and refile suit for technical reasons. Big question is how much Columbia wants to annoy the Mamdani admin, whose position is right on the merits.

If this happened in the city system, a campaign could be on the hook for big penalties. The state system is far laxer, as I wrote back when it launched. Only one-third of campaigns even get audited. nysfocus.com/2024/05/01/new-…
