American war movies have never done a good job being introspective about their own atrocities so I’m not expecting Japanese war movies to do it either

a ideia de que filmes queer não possam ser épicos sem serem “arrogantes” ou “pretensiosos” é extremamente reducionista e homofóbico btw… isso vindo do mesmo homem que comparou Christopher Nolan a Zeus na resenha de A Odisseia…
“La Bola Negra,” a new film by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, dramatizes gay repression and liberation across three interconnected stories. At first, the year is 1937 and viewers are thrust deep into the Spanish Civil War, where a Nationalist soldier and a wounded Republican freedom fighter exchange furtive glances. By the end, it’s 2017, and a Madrid-based historian need only look to Grindr to satisfy an urge. The movie “wants to be a sweeping historical epic of gay longing—a film about what it means to be a man who desires other men in times of war and peace,” Justin Chang writes. Instead, the directors have produced “a film that insists, arrogantly and aggressively, on its own monumentality”. Even compelling performances from Glenn Close, Penélope Cruz, and Lola Dueñas fail to rescue the extravagantly overwrought film. Read Chang's full review: newyorker.com/culture/the-cu…

“help them how?”
“so they don’t end up like me and you.” 🥲

Calling it a film about “what it means to be a man who desires other men in times of war and peace” is such a diabolically reductive reading of a film that is fundamentally concerned with political violence, historical memory, and the generational consequences of repression.

I don’t understand why actors sell their souls to work with DAVID O RUSSELL of all people. he’s an abuser, he’s famously cruel to actors, his movies suck. you’re not gonna win an oscar for the John Madden prime video movie. like even selfishly there’s no upside in it for you

one thing i hate about awards season is how it can color someone’s perception of a film before they even see it based on where it’s “positioned” in the race. pundits are really pushing la bola negra as the main threat to the odyssey for best picture, and i think there’s some pushback from certain groups who refuse to believe a queer spanish film could ever possibly be better than The Epic Of All-Time lol. certainly not saying *all* criticism of it is because of that, but more than a few takes i’ve seen seem to not-so-subtly stem from xenophobia and homophobia in favor of a more “traditional” (read: straight and white-led) contender.
the critiques of la bola negra that call it too “self-important” confuse me quite a bit because in my opinion, this felt like the first film i’ve seen that treats the queer experience - queer desire, queer repression, and everything in between - as “epic,” a genre typically reserved for the Straight White Male protagonist (see: the odyssey, which i also love!) and finally positions these experiences as equally Important in culture and society. this genre imbues them with the high stakes, life-and-death feeling so many of us wrestle with inside for years but shield from the surface, and in that way, i found it to be a revolutionary depiction of these stories for showing them in a new light onscreen they’ve always been denied.

Jon Stewart on Chuck Schumer: “Someone has to meet this moment. You have an opportunity to actually govern. One of the first things you need to do is remove that system of seniority from Democratic politics. It’s a bullshit system and it needs to go. Chuck Schumer fought tooth and nail against half of these fucking people. He does not understand the urgency of the moment and what the future demands”
