That, in many ways, was the story of my visit to Ahmedabad last week. It brought together two ends of the @bitspilaniindia journey, the generations that built the institution and a new generation working on technologies that will shape its future.
It was wonderful to meet #BITSians spanning more than six decades, from the 1960s to the Class of 2025. We felicitated some of our alumni from the 1960s and listened to their stories of BITS from another era. Ahmedabad itself is now home to more than 1,500 BITSians. @BITSAA International has completed 25 years. Ahmedabad chapter alumni have been meeting formally every second Sunday since the year 2000 and is among the earliest chapters of BITSAA.
At the other end of this journey was my interaction with the Indian AI Research Organization (IAIRO), and particularly Prof. Amit Sheth, one of our distinguished BITS Pilani alumni and the founder of @IAIRO_official .
#IAIRO is an exciting experiment. Its ambition is not merely to use AI developed elsewhere, but to build India's own capabilities in AI. It is bringing together world class researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs and industry to create AI talent, undertake original research, develop indigenous IP and technologies, and translate research into products and applications. I particularly liked their emphasis on sovereign AI and on building compact, custom and neurosymbolic AI systems for high value applications.
𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗦 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗶 recently signed an MoU with 𝗜𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗢, and we are now exploring much deeper collaborations in research, PhD programmes, talent development and translation of research into impact.
I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. There is something very satisfying about seeing an institution's past and future come together in the same city.

This meeting bit.ly/AmitModiji with Hon PM @narendramodi @PMOIndia has resulted in IAIRO: iairo.ai . Looking forward to top-end talent creation, innovations, and a prototype-to-product ecosystem to help move India to become a deep-tech AI product nation.
I am glad to share that Gujarat is set to take a historic leap in the field of Artificial Intelligence with the establishment of the Indian AI Research Organization (IAIRO) at GIFT City, to be operational from 1 January 2026.
With an estimated outlay of ₹300 crore over the first five years, IAIRO will be set up on a PPP model with equal participation of the Government of Gujarat, Government of India and industry partners. Leading pharma companies, through the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), have joined as anchor private partners.
IAIRO will function as a Special Purpose Vehicle and a national, non-profit, multidisciplinary AI research hub, focusing on advanced AI research and development, AI-driven products and solutions, capacity building and policy-oriented research, while fostering deep collaboration between academia, startups, industry and government.
The organization will operate on a hybrid compute model, combining on-premise GPU infrastructure with national platforms such as the IndiaAI Cloud, enabling scalable, secure and cutting-edge AI innovation.
Artificial Intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies of our times—reshaping healthcare, education, agriculture and the economy.
Under the visionary guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @NarendraModi ji, Gujarat is proud to be at the forefront of India’s AI journey, becoming the first state in the country to establish such an institution on a PPP model.
This initiative will strengthen India’s AI ecosystem, prepare future-ready human capital, and further position Gujarat as a global hub for emerging technologies and innovation.
We aim to create exceptional deep-tech AI talent, build a prototype-to-product ecosystem with investor engagement, and advance our goal of becoming a product nation: iairo.ai. The journey started 2 years ago: bit.ly/AmitModiji .

The next round of layoff should be of those ill-informed managers currently laying off workers in anticipation of GenAI increasing productivity: teapawt.net/GaryMarcus/status/1817… @GaryMarcus
𝗪𝗼𝘄! Incredibly damning new study on GenAI from Upwork, via @baldurbjarnason:
“Nearly half (47%) of workers using AI say they have no idea how to achieve the productivity gains their employers expect. Over three in four (77%) say AI tools have decreased their productivity and added to their workload in at least one way.”
Says Bjarnason, “It’s quite unusual for a study like this on a new office tool, roughly two years after that tool—ChatGPT—exploded into people’s workplaces, to return such a resoundingly negative sentiment.”
Many on X may love ChatGPT for work, but much of the outside world feels quite differently.
As Bjarnason points out, “it fits with the studies on the actual functionality of said tool: the incredibly common and hard to fix errors, the biases, the general low quality of the output, and the often stated expectation from management that it’s a magic fix for the organisational catastrophe that is the mass layoff fad.”
