We asked nearly 200 teachers to interview their (~4000) students about this past year and their hopes for next year. Then, we asked them what they planned to do differently next year as a result. This is some of what they said: 🧵

this piece from my new book "goodbye, again" is one of my absolute favorite things i've ever written. i wanted to take the most derided form of writing there is, the clickbait listicle, and turn it into something devastating and personal and lyrical. i hope you like it.

The darkest hour is just before the dawn, and that, I see, which does not guarantee power to draw the next breath, nor abolish the suspicion that the brightest hour we will ever see occurs just before we cease to be. —James Baldwin, born #OTD in 1924 poets.org/poet/james-baldwin

"There’s a tendency within the higher education space to argue that these students are adults, and they have the right to fail. I think that’s just a really counterproductive perspective... Instead, I think they have the right to succeed." -Nikki Edgecombe postsecondaryreadiness.org/p…

I’m reminded of what Dr. King said after four little girls were murdered in an Alabama church: “we must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderer.”

Me: how much does it costs to borrow a thousand books a year from the library? Small boy: $500? Smaller girl: $1,000! Me: It’s free! Six hundred kids in the hall gasp, then cheer.

Shout out to all the first generation students starting college this week. Universities are cool but bizarre places with strange expectations around social & cultural capital that can be tough to navigate. Don’t stress about that. You deserve to be there. You’re gonna be great.
